I think where it fits in, blood, violence and sexual scenes are fine. But far too often I found that if they had left some of it out or toned it down, it would make it far superior. In other films and shows, I find it needs to be ramped up to be effective.

I'm just surprised that I hadn't already heard of this, and then I noticed it wasn't HBO, so that makes sense. If it was a HBO show, quality would be virtually guaranteed. As it's not, I'm not in a rush to see it. That said, It doesn't need to be banned. It does however, need the graveyard shift on Channel 4 as many things before it.

Quote:
CAMPAIGNERS are fighting to prevent a sexually explicit American TV series about the Roman Empire from hitting Britain, it emerged yesterday.

“I think a lot of people are going to be shocked and they are going to shut off their televisions,” said Lawless.

Err that’s the point of the off switch

If you don’t want to watch it, dont't. Go and watch something else.

I’m sure that “Lawless” watch some mind numbingly banal stuff that would want me to stick my head in the oven – but I don’t ask for that to be banned I just choose not to watch it

Post watershed then show it – after all “I Claudius” had sex, drugs and violence back in the 70’s

Quote:
In 1976, BBC Television adapted the book and its sequel into the popular TV serial, also entitled I, Claudius. The production won three Emmys in 1978 and four BAFTAs in 1977

Mary Whitehouse and the National Viewers and Listeners Association – another self appointed do-goody watch dog wanted that banned

Ah - Rob Tapert. I see. History was never his strong point, but making entertaining TV certainly is. He’s Mr Lawless, BTW.

I see the connection with Xena: Warrior Princess has already been made, so well done.

I'm half an half. I like my gore, but at the same time all TV appears to be heading in the direction of more swearing/sex/violence/shouting and it annoys me. That being said, if it's in context, realistic and makes for good viewing, then woohoo! :-)

Why not? It is latin.

A relationship to Latin cunnus has not been conclusively shown. From Middle English [LIFTED] from Old English *[LIFTED] from West Proto-Germanic *kunte < Proto-Germanic *kunton. Cognate with Frisian kunte, dialectal Swedish kunta, dialectal Danish kunte, Dutch kont (“arse”) and Icelandic kunta

God Wiki is useful for swear words! :D

It's both issues for me - historical correctness and whether or not it'll sound appropriate in the show itself...

It's strange how the C word seems to have replaced the F word as THE word NOT to say. When I was younger, we didn't think much about the C word, but we knew that we'd get it if we used the F word.

Nowadays, my colleagues and I use "F" like builders, but a few of them don't like the C word and I seldom use it myself.

The F word is so practical, though and fits almost every occasion, but the C word can only really be used as an insult- usually considered to be the worst.

I want to see it mainly for these reasons.

Haven't even looked at any of the links, but given that it's Mediawatch that are causing the fuss, I'm inclined to say, show it. Anything that twat has to say is not to be listened to.

Is that the old National Viewers Association that used to be run by Mary Whitehouse? If so they ended up creating incredible demand for some show because they complained. Stick an F word in, mary would go off her trolley, the press would pick up on it and the next week the audience or VHS sales shot up. Self defeating really. All it has done is get viewers interested where as they may have been put off.

Yeah, I think it's the descendent of her outfit. He's like rent-a-moaner. On any of those clip shows, he always turns up being interviewed and moaning about something.

More info here.

Its use as a swear word is likely because cunnus can be shortened to the c word and the hard T at the end of the word makes it blunt enough.
