Am I the only person here who actually likes Mr Woss ?

I find his sarcastic "I don't care who I offend, this is what I think" laid back and somewhat self-important style of wit very entertaining and easy to laugh along with.

I think he's a good entertainer.

Is he over paid? That's up to the market to value.

No, I do too. Yes, your right it is up to the market value.

If every single network manager on the planet died tomorrow except one you can expect the remaining one to be on a mint. He gets paid for his personality not his skills and if thats worth X million to the BBC thats their choice. We only care because we have to pay the outdated license fee.

That's just the point - he wasn't paid market value. ITV have gone on record as saying they don't pay their top stars anywhere near what the BBC does and, given the current ad market, they simply can't afford to compete. The people who are earning massive money on ITV are doing so by owning the formats they are on and franchising them and/or using phone in voting neither of which would be available to Ross as there's virtually nothing original about his shows he could claim ownership of. The fact his C4 show has fallen though must partly be due to his wage demands, because talk shows are otherwise incredibly cheap to make. Nobody else is willing to pay Jonathan Ross near what the BBC were prepared to pay him.

Of course, he's not alone. The BBC pays an awful lot of it's staff (especially the front of house talent) very well indeed. It just doesn't seem willing to spend it's own money on the gruntwork of television, thus (for example) the hiving off of what is now Red Bee Media or the more or less abandonment of the Dirac codec research.

I’m sure they will be more than happy to plaster Graham Norton over our screens at any given opportunity.

I actually like the Graham Norton Show. The guests are not there to make the host look even more pretentious like Wossy did. Though I think that they could actually look for someone that is completely new.

Ant & Dec were on a reputed £15 million each golden handcuff contract

I think that the two of them are getting over exposed, though I have no objections to their pay. There are two of them to start with!

Over how long? Plus the shows they host - especially that celebrity in the jungle thing - bring in income to ITV & the production company though phone voting.

As I said, the people on ITV who are making big money are primarily on shows that are income generating (or at least cost neutral). Ross wasn't making any money for anyone but himself. If he went to ITV, he couldn't generate them the income the shows like X-factor and the celebrity jungle thing do so they wouldn't pay him as much money. The basic fact is this : The BBC was paying Jonathan Ross much, much more than anyone else would have been paying him for the same output. How this is defined as 'market value' escapes me.

Jon

Channel 4 were bidding for Ross's services and reportedly offered 18mill which the BBC matched. Therefore at the time of negotiating his contract the market value do him was £18m
