Are you joking? I've never met anyone of any age that has watched it and I've lived up North all my life.

Mind you I have social skills, a sense of humour and intelligence. Perhaps I've just been moving in different circles. :D

I quite liked "Dinnerladies", being a soft suvverner.

I used to like LotSW, too, as it was perfect Sunday evening entertainment and an antidote to Songs of Praise.

But it outstayed its welcome. I think there's barely an original cast member left now, and I suspect the thought that dear old Peter Sallis might not be around for ever has finally prompted the Beeb to pull the plug.

Which, LotSW or The Office?
As for 'northern' humour not being loved by the rest of us, Peter Kaye has enjoyed massive success. I think there's more to it than merely 'It's a Northern thing, you wouldn't understand.'

I'll tell the mother in law you said that... she might be in her "mid 60's" and not the best at walking in the whole wide world, but boy are you gonna get your butt kicked!

  :P

Why did I read this and think "What the hell has this got to do with Lord of the rings?"

Also, don't get me started on Peter Kaye... I can't be the only one who thinks that you can only use the same material so many times... a bit like LotR, or whatever that old folks programme is called. ;)

My parents loved it and we watched it as a family (southern). I had no idea it was still running over the last 15 years.

I don't think so.

In its heyday, with the original trio of Foggy, Compo and Clegg, the writing was superb. David Nobbs is a talented script writer, and the interplay between the characters had just the right amount of whimsy. However, I fear the last two decades' worth have not been up to the former years, as the same old tired gags had to be wheeled out, and new characters had to be brought in as cast members died off. The original formula became more of a homeopathic remedy version over the years.

+1, it's the same stuff from, what, 4-5 years ago now? :o

Looking at the link in the O.P. it seems the BBC have made a slight mistake...

The BBC wrote:
Long-running BBC comedy Last of the Summer Wine is to be axed after 37 years, the BBC has announced.

Shouldn't that have been 370 years?  :etc:

Indeed he is but he wrote Reginald Perrin and had nothing to do with Last of the summer wine. Perrin was both 'Great!" and 'Super!'

My mistook. Blame it on advancing senility. :?

I meant Roy Clarke. He did Open All Hours, which was a hoot. He also did Keeping Up Appearances, which wasn't.

Last of the Summer Wine was bloody awful, but it's a shame it's going I think. It's a bit of an institution really.

As for the northern/southern humour thing is concerned, as far as I can tell northern humour just isn't funny. I guess it's because it's so grim up there.
