I know a lot of people with a touch pad on their laptop who carry a mouse with them. I think that speaks volumes.

I think it speaks volumes about the quality of many modern touch pads, and the interface software, as much as it does about mice.

Hmm, I've used excellent touchpads (including Macs), but don't like them compared to mice. I prefer them to c**p touhpads of course, but I find my fingertips get irritated by using any touchpad for more than a few minutes.

I like the multi-touch trackpad on the MacBook range, but I still plug a mouse in, when using the 13" MBP at a desk.

Like Sas said, it needs pressure sensitivity in order to replace a traditional tablet - one thing that will also hold the iPad style devices back from doing "professional" work, in their current configuration.

The Magic Mouse makes a better compromise, I think. That said, I'll be sticking with my MS Intellimouse Explorer 3 for now...

I still have a USB mouse plugged in to my iMac even though it comes with a Magic Mouse. Mice are so very useful and even touch screens may not eliminate their use.
