The bare fact is this : Apple have sold three million of the buggers in a month. The problem with the antenna was widely known within 48 hours of it hitting the shelves. The population as a whole patently does not give a toss. If they did, they wouldn't be selling at anything like the rate they are. All the stuff on here, all the threads, all the blog posts, all the news articles... They're irrelevant. The public reaction has shown they simply don't matter. They make a massive amount of noise in an empty hall, while the rest of the world goes about it's business oblivious to their 'wisdom'.
All the fanboyisim in the world isn't going to change anything. People are buying iPhones because they want them and whether we think they are fools, and whether we think Apple is being 'desperate' is all just spitting in the wind.
Apple can put out a 'broken' phone and sell three million of them in a month. Think about that for a second. A phone which every internet media outlet is screaming simply does not work and yet roughly the equivalent of the population of Birmingham still plonked several hundred quid/dollars down for one anyway.
This is all a waste of time. This is my last word on the subject. Goodnight.

Well said, sir. I have been amazed how many critical commentators have failed to notice that rather inconvenient fact. It's Apple's misfortune to be so large a corporation that they cannot possibly be benign any more in the eyes of the public or the media, and so we arrive at the hype wars of today orchestrated by the newspapers etc. Back to the OP, I already had my eye on the Galaxy S, but still have to wait 6 months for the contract, so I'll see what Windows Phone can do (if anything).

I absolutely agree with that. But tells us more about apple customers than about apple as a company. I don't dispute that apple users don't see it as a problem. However neutrals will remember how apple handled the issue and that might weight on their decisions in the future so apple did not do itself any favours here... Anyway, I didn't want to talk about iphone in this thread, I wanted to talk about the campaign by Samsung. My thread was hijacked by apple users talking how awesome the iphone is so don't blame me

'Tis good in my opinion. Better yet, the phone itself looks good too.

I think here, you getting into technicalities and me biting on that: But ok, I give you that you didn't say how awesome it is, you just say that reviewers don't know what they're doing. And then we have jonbwfc's post where he suggest that the issue is not really an issue as people will just keep buying. And that is clearly offtopic as he doesn't talk about any of the campaigns, just about apple/iphone awesomeness. But I don't really want to drag him into this again as he said he won't respond anymore so it would be unfair to argue with him about this. So jon, feel free to ignore anything I write...

You live by the hype, you die by a hype. Well, clearly apple is not dying but they always benefit from hypes. So complain that hype is suddenly working against them seems unreasonable to me. My 2c... 6 months is an "eternity" in smartphone market today so it is very unlikely you will buy Galaxy S. Every single month something better comes out in Android market. Motorola Droid is not even 10 months old and now the DroidX is out. And Droid2 will be out by the end of the year too. And that is just Motorola... Then we have androids from HTC, Googlen and SonyE, new windows phones, new OS6 from RIM. Times are good for gadgets lovers...

Hang on, doesn't the Samung run Android, so this thread should be in the OSS forum? (8-p)

I find it hard to keep up with all these new handsets. I am sure the GS is a nice phone with some good points and some bad points. Will ANY of the bad points make the mainstream press though? I doubt it.
They are just trying to cash in on the Apple brand. Can't say I blame them how else do you get people talking about yet another "me too" device?

This is about Samsung, not about Android. But feel free to introduce "Samsung advertising campaings" section Haha, nice try to bring this thread off-topic

You make it sound like going off-topic is a bad thing! Some of us strive to take threads off topic! This is The Meeting Place .

Mind you was I off topic? This is not the first Android phone. So this is Samsung saying "ooh look I have an Android too". This is not a significant advance on Android either. So how are Samsung going to market it? On features? On innovative design? On styling? This advert is about getting people talking, cashing in on Apples cache.

TBH I didn't read which bit of your post he quoted - I was just appalled that going off-topic was seen as bad (8-p) Nothing in your post stood out as off-topic when I read it first time. Waffles. Tasty, tasty waffles.

Bad points.... slight pause when opening apps with lots of background apps (will be sorted in froyo) and awkward lock/power button position Good points.... it's not an iPhone so MUCH cheaper on contract and it runs android Had one for a few weeks now, slight shame the app screen on the stock launcher looks like the iPhone but you can change the launcher easily and freely

My point is that nobody much cares. I am sure it is a nice phone, I am equally sure that the number of column inches the press will give it will be fairly minimal. It is a "me too" Android phone. There will be another one along in a minute. They could compare it to the G1 or the Droid or the Nexus One, but they don't. They could compare it to a Nokia or a Blackberry (both market best sellers) but they don't. They want publicity so they invoke the Apple kudos. I don't blame them, but it is just a bit "obvious".
