In terms of more recent cinema, would LOTR be about as close as an arcing epic? :?

It would be, BUT it already comes from an existing work, so it doesn’t count. To qualify, you need something of a similar depth and development, but it would have to be entirely new and have cinema as it’s first outing.

I'm here, I'm here.
I originally didn't come in here because I thought it was all about gaming.
In the OP … "The exec immediately said one of his key missions was to change the firm's reputation for arrogance [ … ] The Call of Duty franchise is a force of nature. I think it is the closest thing this generation has to a Star Wars." How can the "exec" say the former and then go on to make a mockery of it with the latter? Does he not realise what he just did?!?

Like Okenobi said, and for the reasons outlined by Paul, there will likely never again be another phenomena like Star Wars. I think anything trying to even attempt that would be incredibly foolhardy. If something gets to that level, then great, but to actively go out and seek it is almost doomed to failure.
The multi-media landscape now just doesn't benefit the Star Wars model.
Also, the original three Star Wars films are just ace. (8+)

Mark

A just post, my liege.

However, my original point stands and those of real character (that's Mark, Jon, and I think Amnesia, but I felt his post was a little ambiguous!) know the truth.... (8+D

I think that the 3 prequels prove that all the 'depth' of the original Star Wars films was purely illusory.

I reckon half of that was bad editing. The director/producer was so concerned about getting the story across that much of the character stuff that was shot was edited out. Even just a quick look at the deleted scenes show that they could have been far better, deeper films.
