Yeah, that sounds like a good idea!

Note to Sas: You could use Joomla! dude. It's easy to implement things like Wordpress (could be used for things like reviews, news etc) and forums.

Or make your own website on awesome Frontpage. :)

Seeing that frontpage as a product hasn't been available for a couple of years we are safe saying it won't be front page. :D

Nope Sharepoint designer is not frontages replacement. It only replaces the functionality of editing Sharepoints design templates.

Expressions is MS replacement for frontage for normal sites. Sadly that is not free

May I ask as to how the site is to be presented? Is it going to fit rigid sections such as "How to's", "reviews", etc? Or will there be a concept of columns like in a paper/magazine? Or a mixture of both, as in articles are submitted and can be seen as a column, but an article can be classed as a howto or a review, thus making it easy to 'smart search' for howto's on linux for example?

Also, Frontpage was pretty good back in 1998, if it outputted valid code, I'd still use it, I really liked the management environment it gave, much better than Dreamweaver for project management I thought...

more likely to be tradition web site layout in terms of IA although the templates will support columns etc etc so the pages could have a magazine type feel.

Yeah well that would be a slight stumbling block as it didn't know teh meaning of valid code  also it didn't support CSS.

Hehe, yeah...But it had some awesome features, like checking external links were still valid, Dreamweaver never seemed to do that as well as Frontpage did...That's about where the cool features ended...But I liked it :P Frontpage 2000 was a load of cr"p

Rarely a truer word spoken :D

Given the free technet that came out today you should be able to get expressions ( frontpages replacement that does produce valid code and does support CSS ) for nothing :D

I can understand using a dedicated server for work use but for a website like this, that amount of hardware is surely not necessary.

Although if you're already using your rack it makes sense to store this onto the back of it.

It's a long story & something that doesn't need discussing in the site development thread as it makes ideas etc difficult to find.

Not quite that simple I'm afraid. It's my server in my rack in a data centre with 24 hour monitoring & technicians on site.
I have to pay for the tech support, the cost to have the rack in the centre, the actual servers, the bandwidth & space and upgrades/software licences.
Add to that the potential server change and it's not cheap.

I take it, if you're looking at funding the site through merchandise, you're not planning on website adverts?

Once you get the payment system up and running, have you thought about asking for donations? I'm not rich, but I think I could stretch to a few quid, if it helped to keep the site running. Surely, I'm not the only one who would be willing to cough up a little?

I'd be happy to donate a little on a half regular basis, it would never be much, £5 here or £10 there, but I'd guess that 'ever little helps' applies...?

Sas has already said that the server is paid for by clients. I think. Correct me if I'm wrong sas.

That's the servers taken care of, but if any software needs to be purchased for the development of the site and it's content I wouldn't have a problem giving up a few quid to help out.
