No idea. I think AT&T also provide them with SIMs installed. Could be the reason why it isn't documented, they translated the US manual, without localising the procedures...

Also, given the number of iPhones that have probably been sold in the last 5 weeks, without any stock available, they probably sent them straight out. The iPhone was still in a plastic sealed box from the factory, the SIM card in an envelope from T-Mobile, the contract and everything were in duplicated form with the courier,,,

I had forgotten that. I had to go to YouTube to figure out how to insert the SIM. It may have been in the documentation but I could not see it. It is not as obvious as it might me on some phones.

What if you buy a sim-free unlocked version? ;)

Mine came from the local Carphone Warehouse.

They were pretty clued up, much to my surprise. Every member of staff had their own iPhone.

I got mine from a CW but it wasn't a 'new' purchase, I was an upgrade. They gave me the SIM on the day to use in my old phone as they didn't have any of the right iPhones available at the time. I had to swap it when the iPhone arrived a few days later. I was lucky insofar as I'd downloaded the american manual as a PDF from Apple' site to familiarise myself before it arrived - this is great tip by the way, and not just for Apple stuff; if you buy (or are thinking of buying) any bit of consumer electronics it's always worth checking the supplier web site for a PDF of the manual to read to see if there are any gotchas - so I had some idea of what the procedure was. There's also a help article about it on Apple's web site IIRC but I suppose it's not obvious, or the article wouldn't be needed.

The coating on the iPhone screen is excellent, it is sitting next to my iPod Touch, which is a greasy mess, the iPhone was used yesterday and the screen is still pretty much clean. Why couldn't they use that coating on the iPod? :(

The iPod app crashed last night. :( I had to switch off and on again, because the iPod app got stuck indexing the catalogue, for over 15 minutes, restarting loaded it a fraction of a second! :? Apart from that, I've been pleased with it so far. A day on the road, with some twittering, a bit of web browsing, a couple of calls and a handful of SMS and it used 10-15% battery, so in the same ball park as my old htc. A bit of a relief, given some of the horror stories of it only lasting a few hours or scraping through a day...

The metal border on the screen has rough edges, not sharp or anything, but you notice the edge if you run your finger round it.

Looking for a decent case now. The non-scratch glass screen of my current htc is a little scratched after a year of travelling around in my back pocket... So probably pick up a leather belt case or something.

So far, apart from the iPod glitch, I'm pretty happy with the change.

No there's a surprise.

Ever met an iPhone owner who isn't happy with their phone? ;)

At least I have had some practice... I'll know what to do when I get my iPhone back from the workshop!

Am genuinely surprised. Really, I am. I managed to insert the SIM into the phone. When I unpacked the iphone, I unpacked everything in the box and laid them out. Became very clear what the little metal thing was for when I looked at the holes on the iphone. Don't like it though as I've already lost the tool (despite putting it back in to the box) and I now need the SIM number to transfer my old phone number.

Completely agree. Although I found it a little too slippery and almost dropped it! The screen itself I've found to be unresponsive at times, having to almost jab the screen rather than my usual soft-touch.

Mine did that when trying to browse using Safari. I had it for eighteen hours when it happened, not pleased. My last phone (K800i) would occasionally crash but I knew about that before I bought it.

I found I managed to get something stuck in between the metal border and the screen and spent longer than ten seconds trying to fish it back out. I would have preferred some kind of sealing here.

Ditto. I've seen some people use some nice leather cases. But I was looking at one of these: clicky until I heard about the overheating issue.

There's a thing called Active Print Traveler (I'm using AP lite - cuz it's free). All you need to print from it to your iphone is a wireless connection and a small exe (which can be run from USB stick). Unfortunately you just get one page to write the notes on with the option to bin or print when you've finished typing but with the new cut & paste functionality it's just a matter of copying from iphone notes (or whatever) and pasting into AP.
That's the Lite version. The full version has more functionality. WHen I got the lite version it was free - may still be free now. The full version is £2.39 and also allows you to print photos, contacts and webpages (I might buy this.. didn't realise how much extra functionality the full version had).

eReader's good and there's some free books you can get and download from the app. (course it was produced before iTunes got updated to allow incremental additions so you have to set up an account with eReader if you want to get any of the ebooks that you have to pay for)
http://www.ereader.com/

FileAid is also brilliant - can import files over wireless ethernet and can view quite a lot of them (Most image files, PDF, office & iWork pages etc.)

Just bought my most expensive app.

tChess Pro

http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSt ... 45501&mt=8

At about a fiver is a seriously good chess app. for the seriously serious chess player.

There are plenty of chess apps if you just want to play, this one however provides statistics, tuition and board analysis too.
