Dave Gorman on Dave talking about the consumer society and how we're led to produce waste by "special offers" and poundland-style shops. His example was asking which was the best deal when a pack of 6 combs cost the same as a pack of 12. The point - missed by the audience - was that he didn't want 6 or 12 combs but just one.

Anyone else watch Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on Channel 4 the other day?
Anyone of the ones that did (if any actually did) find the characters really difficult to care for?
It was a very odd thing for a pilot episode to do.

It's a good show this one. The game with the Royal Mail was ace and I'm thinking of buying a [LIFTED] hat.

Or are we all just used to having instant gratification and not letting things grow, like the best shows have done over time? ;)

Person of Interest didn't do this. Fringe didn't do this. The Walking Dead didn't do this.
Three recent examples of very good genre shows that gave us characters to care about in the first episodes.
I think the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. show is relying a little too much on the audiences prior knowledge of the Marvel universe, specifically that of The Avengers.
This is not a good thing.
Well, it might be a good thing to initially pull in a fairly sizeable audience, but it needs to try harder if it wants to retain that audience.

Granted, I'm judging on it's first episode, further viewing will be necessary.

I did, the only one I found difficulty to care for was the solo agent who resented being brought into the team. It was a good first episode.

I have to agree with you there.

Of course I couldn't see what all the fuss was about regarding The Avengers. So that might not help with liking it.

Didn't seem to be much of what I would call classic Joss Whedon in there either.

I'll stick with it for the moment, but unless it picks up over the next few episodes I'll probably stop watching.

The trailers certainly had little in the way of personality, and it doesn't help that everyone in them seems to be from American central casting...

'By Any Means' tonight looks kind of interesting. A kind of 'Mission Impossible'/'Hustle' style of thing. Know next to nothing about it other than the trailer though..

Only for the TV guide I wouldn't have known it even existed until today.

As it turns out, I'd rate it 'OK'. The 'heist' itself was rather predictable but it was generally well acted by a pretty high grade cast. Given Eva Green's prominent role in the trailer for next week's it seems they may be going for 'big name guest star' each week to try to cover over some of the shortcomings.

Overall nothing particularly spectacular, but hell it's either that or, well not much, frankly...

Edit : It might not be Eva Green. Sounds like her though.

It's watchable but there's some ridiculous moments of plot convenience!

It had a spectacular first week in the US but audience is already down 34% in week two!

There are somethings people should be forced to watch because it's good for them. Dave Gorman's Modern Life is Goodish is one of them.
