Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit - Has some of the most implausible scenes I've witnessed in a long time. It's an exercise in treating your audience with contempt.

Death at a Funeral

I got my Amazon FireTV this week and sat down to watch a film on it last night. After much searching for a comedy that we hadn't seen and a description that was halfway interesting.

We started off with "Death at a Funeral". We only got about half an hour into it, it was atrocious!

Haywire

This was the first film I watched on the FireTV. WTF? It was hard to follow, mainly because the music and effects were so loud, I had to turn the volume down to 8, but the speech was so quiet, I had to turn the volume up to 25!

It was somewhat predictable, I've seen "this" film half a dozen times over the last 3 decades under different names... Nothing really new, apart from the lead being female.

Paul
This was the film we finally settled on last night and watched through to the end. It was mildly entertaining, had a few funny moments and the alien was well done. Simon Pegg seemed to have put on weight and Nick Frost looked really fat, much fatter than I remember him in Hot Fuzz - maybe it was just the loose bathrobe he was wearing in the hotel scene...

The story was halfway coherent, but the laughs were few and far between, again, a typical chase movie and lots of homage to sci-fi films over the years - well, homage is maybe a bit much, it is to sci-fi what Shaun of the Dead is to zombie films...

If you are a Simon Pegg fan or liked Shaun of the Dead, it is worth a watch, but don't pin your expectations too high.

Which version was it? The original is superb.

Death at a Funeral - Yip, once Tracey Morgan showed up I was outta there.

Haywire - Director appears to have called in a bunch of favours for dull-ass action flick containing 'cool' chatter.

Oh, before I forget, give a TV show called Crossing Lines a go if it's on Prime over there.

Boring, predictable and embarrassing. All the 'plot twists' or funny moments had a huge billboard ahead of time, telling you what was coming next. It was sloppily made and was an insult to the intelligence of the viewer.

Violet and Daisy - it's interesting enough as you're watching it, it's just that it doesn't have much point to it really.

The Yank reviews were awful. It's out soon here IIRC.

There's been that many TMNT adverts that I was confused as I thought it had already been released in the UK. I suspect they're targetting half-term which is next week or the week after depending on school.
