I used to get bad shaving rash, but haven't had a problem since I shifted to brush and hard soap, however I have been using normal hand soap for a while due to forgetting my soap while on holiday, I got bad shaving rash last time I shaved, is this due to a dull blade, not enough soap or what? I shaved as carefully as I normally do.

Normal hand soap is different to shaving soap. Hand soap is primarily interested in germ removal. Shaving soap is more interested in not [LIFTED] your skin up and giving decent lubrication for your blade.

The Wilkinson sword soap & brush you can get in supermarkets isn't bad for a cheap starter kit. Prep is the key with safety razor shaving. Nice hot shower, then hot towel then apply lather. Start off with 2 downwards passes until you get your technique right. Then I find it better to go WTG, ATG then XTG for a final touch-up pass. If you go WTG, XTG, ATG you will get razor burn at first as you'll have very little stubble left for your ATG pass.

Thanks for the offer. Will probably PM you later this week. Agreed - regarded as being "gloop" rather than anything useful. You can buy some el-cheapo shave soap and brush from supermarkets as a starting point. I bought most of my stuff from traditionalshaving.co.uk with some from mankind.co.uk. There is a world of difference between normal hand soap and shaving soap. For me, hand soap leaves my skin very dry but shaving soap doesn't. If all else is equal, I'd blame the single variable here. That's food for thought. I've been going WTG, XTG and then ATG as I find it reduces any razor burn/rash. Will have a play around this week and see how I feel with WTG, ATG, XTG.

I find my XTG pass on my neck works best as a diagonal pass (bottom to top). Nice and close with no irritation.

That's why I have to have four passes on my neck.
First is WTG - have found it eases some of the irritation with further passes. Though this AM I did a single XTG (s->N) and then a single ATG pass - which was acceptable for work.
Second is XTG S->N. This eases the discomfort for the final pass.
Third is XTG at 45* angle S->N. This helps get those tricky areas so I'm closer to BBS.
Final is ATG.

I got some foam as the supermarket next to work only had a shave cream/stick and no brush to use Will try out the WS soap + brush to see how it works Suggestions for getting a hot towel suitably hot? No airing cupboard in the house and the heating is off at the minute in summer and on sparingly otherwise

I soak mine under the hot water tap. It's more of a flannel type thing but if I soak it in hot water, rinse and then apply to the face. I do this once before shaving, then I make the lather and do it a second time just before applying the lather.

Hot towel options.
1) Soak a flannel then microwave it. Then stick it in a plastic bag whilst you shower.
2) Fill your sink with hot water, stick the flannel in there and leave it in there whilst you shower

This seems to have turned into the facial equivalent of a detailing thread!

I've looked at some of the shaving forums. Currently on badgerandblade. After what I've seen, it's as bad as detailing - you can spend £££ on various items, trying this and that. There are shavers with 3-4 razors, use various blades and products to get that finish. I've sunk something in the order of £1500 into detailing products. I refuse to go that far ever again with shaving or photography. Hence with shaving, I'm going change blades only ans with photography, once I've got the kit I need, I'm going to stop.

I only just opened it to see if after 11 pages it'd turned into something different and am amazed it's still going! Did I miss any discussion on permanent hair removal (ie. electrolysis) for the face? Not the stuff pitched at girl's whiskers - I mean full on nuke-forever for the man who never wants facial hair. I'd be so up for that.

Oh lordy, we're perilously close to waxing now. This is a detailing thread, surely.
