Just finished Bone By Bone by Carol O'Connell.

The story concerns an ex-army investigator, Oren, returning home after 20 years having left after his brother Josh disappeared. After staying the night at the family home (just the father still lives there) he finds a human jawbone on the doorstep next morning. Oren's father is surprisingly calm about the whole thing and explains that this has happened many times. The skeletal parts belong to Josh and he is being sent home bone by bone.

I thought this was a superb premise for a thriller/detective story and the first few chapters are gripping, but after a while it becomes one of those investigations where everybody in the locality seems to have something to hide and it becomes a bit more conventional and contrived. Overall it is a good read but doesn't live up to the initial concept.

Very good book about an ex military guy investigating the cause of a suicide that he witnesses.

I love the Reacher books too.

Gone Tomorrow was my first Reacher novel and since that one I've been out and picked up the first two.

I'm onto the last Millenium novel now - The Girl who Kicked the Hornets Nest - and would recommend the series.

Stieg Larsson writes the millenium series. I'd also recommend them.

many thanks, I hadn't thought of googling the book title when I posted - it's early lol... These look like quite good. I have been looking for other authors for a while now...

I dont know why but it took me a good few chapters to get into the first Millenium book. I think I'd gotten used to reading quick paced novels like Reacher, etc. Glad I stuck with it though as by the time I'd gotten to the end of the second book I couldnt get the third open fast enough!

Another series I would recommend is the Emporer series by Conn Iggulden. I never had any real interest in Ancient Rome/Caeser but was encouraged to try the books by a friend. The first book for me didnt really get going until about half way through but once it did I was hooked.

This thread is reminding me just how long it is since I read a book. As a kid we never had a TV in the house, so I used to read voraciously. Nowadays, although we have a TV, it's generally the internet that's taken over. I think the fact that I walk to work doesn't help, I used to catch public transport which gave me the time. Might be time to try something new though.

Having finished "Magician", I'm now into "Talon of the Silver Hawk".

So far, it's a much slower book than some of Feist's other works. I like it.

I'm currently reading:

13 Things That Don't Make Sense

The book, published in August 2008, explores 13 anomalies, the things that science can’t explain, and uses historical examples to show how these anomalies are likely to lead us to the next scientific revolutions. The purpose of this website is to provide a discussion forum for the issues raised. Scientific evidence is ever-changing, and the web provides the perfect place to keep up to date with the latest evidence and ideas about these topics.

And then it's onto...
Elephants on Acid and other Bizarre Experiments

is there a link to the series in chronological order? Ihate it when I read a book out of sequence.

We tend to read when we go on holiday, nice cottage, quiet countryside, glass of beer/wine, good book - really gets you away from work...

Funnily enough I've just taken a break from the current book (JA Konrath, The List - not bad for a pulpy trash-type thriller) to re-read the first Stig Larsson - The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Found it much easier to get into second time around; first time I wouldn't have persevered with it if my wife hadn't already read it and told me it was worth the effort - it is, as are the others in the series, The Girl who played with Fire (#2) and The Girl who kicked the Hornets Nest (#3).

Before that I'd just read Lee Child's latest - 61 Hours (great, but with a real gotcha at the end) and Michael Crichton's (from beyond the grave) Pirate Latitudes. I also have Andrew Gross' Reckless on the go (pretty good) and James Patterson's London Bridges (so-so). Matt Hilton's Dead Mens Dust, too. I've started Wolf Hall (Hilary Mantel), but need to be in the right frame of mind for that kind of book, and can't really handle more than 3 or 4 at a time these days - getting old, lol ;)

Cheers, Pete

I use Wikipedia for that very purpose by looking up the author :)
