Repeat after me: There. Is. No. Cap.

I have UNLIMITED broadband 24/7.

I reckon Amnesia downloads the entire internet, every single day.

That's not hard. The internet is just a small black box on my desk.

OK so no cap but there can be agreessive traffic shaping

Yes, I'll give you that one. I never notice it, though.

Then again, apart from this TiVo thing, I don't spend hours on YouTube or watching iPlayer. My internet usage tends to be forums, tweeting and email. I upload rarely, so most of my traffic is download, but I'm not trying to download the whole internet each time. ;) :D

With no wires. Cos it's wireless.

You can get fibre to premises then?
Lucky get.

The street cabinet variety yes. Full fibre not quite but it should quadruple the download speed I can get. I suspect I could get faster if the last bit of cable from the telegraph pole to the master socket wasn't ancient and buried behind some god awful stone cladding but hey ho. Could get Virgin Media as well but my brother has that and hasn't been overly impressed with the reliability.

You don't need to put anything on the wall for fttc. I wouldn't bother informing my landlord about something like that anyway, but fair enough if you want I guess.

That was what hit me. They also have different thresholds in different areas. Where I lived the official peak was 4pm to 9 pm but in reality it was 9 am to 11pm. Traffic management would kick in 10 am.

It was updates. I have thousands of apps, and regularly get 20 apps per day that need to be updated, and that is not including the OSX apps. When you have 4 machines all wanting a 4Gb update then it easily swamps the daily limit. If you tried and spread the updates out it could still cause problems if they were not finished by 9 am.

You have thousands of apps? 20 apps per day need updating? There's surely no way that you can use all that software.

You're doing it wrong.

Also, you and users like you are the reason for traffic shaping in the first place.

Could you not just download the update one and install it on the machines over the network?

It hit me too. It was my initial upload to BackBlaze which did for me. I suddenly noticed bandwidth being reduced in the evening. When I adjusted BackBlaze’s upload to fall outside of Virgin’s target times, we got our speed back and were never affected again.

So, yes, Virgin do shape traffic. We don’t usually notice it, and we do use things like iPlayer quite a bit.

Just went into a pub I'd never been into before in my local area for a pub quiz. Walked away from the bar after buying 3 drinks and the landlord muttered "faggot" under his breath, audible on purpose.

I felt like breaking a chair over his head but he'd have probably still beat me up as he was a fat bald huge bastard, but my blood was boiling I can tell you, at the sheer ignorance, pointlessness and bigotry of it. Needless to say, I shan't be spending my money in there ever again, I suddenly felt like I was on the school playground again, it's a world I left behind a long time ago thankfully.

For the record I'm not gay, but obviously part of his subconscious was attracted to me, the well-groomed picture of masculine perfection that I am.
