I've eaten a whole cabbage, four oranges and a lot of fruit juice today. I'm in so much pain and am still heavily constipated :(

I'm sure you all wanted to know that!

Peter.

Some exercise can help move things along; even something simple like a good brisk walk.

I used to suffer a lot as a kid. Then I had my appendix out, and it's not happened since. That was over 20 years ago!

Unfortunately, I'm still recovering from swine flu, so it's hard to get any exercise. I have been playing on the Wii Fit, but I'm not sure it's helping a lot.

I've never, ever suffered from constipation, so it's all a bit new to me!

Peter.

If I keep eating lots of fibre, fruit and drinking lots of water, will my constipation ease itself? I've not had a bowel movement for over 48 hours now :?

Peter.

You should probably go easy on bulky insoluble fibre until it moves. You have a giant plug of compressed matter which needs to come out. Eating lots is only going to increase the amount of pressure being put on it, which will result in painful wind and cramps. It's too late to actually change the consistency of the stuck stool by eating alone.

The simple and "direct" approach is a suppository, which would probably shift it in under an hour. For professional advice, phone your doctors surgery or consult your local pharmacist. It's a bit late in the evening now though, and hopefully you'll be "cured" by morning.

Thanks a lot JJW009.

I am scared of my new doctor, so I will see whether it cures on its own. Will softener products, such as DulcoEase, relieve me at all or is it just for 'new' stools?

Peter.

No, it won't, just use a laxative if you're going to take anything.

I don't want to be too graphical, but it's a little tender around there at the moment. Will a laxative force it out painfully or soften the existing stools to make it easier?

Thanks,

Peter.
