That did make me cringe a bit. Especially the woofing. A bit like me saying "wong tong yong, that's what you say it is lol" to a Chinaman.
This got me to thinking … why didn't the TARDIS translate for Clara?

Mark

it don't like her!

Or there are limits to the TARDIS' abilities. We can't have things being solved by Timelord magic all the time.

We know that Clara is somewhat of a paradox, so it's entirely possible that there is some sort of restriction of ability, but I also think there's possibly that the TARDIS is trying to make some sort of statement.
Either that or it just got totally overlooked by everyone involved, and with the level of scrutiny and detail Steven Moffat puts in to the show, I'm not entirely crazy about this idea.

Making the TARDIS sentient like that just adds anther level of Deus ex Machina to the programme which, frankly, we don't need. So I like to assume that the TARDIS is a machine in the same way that my car is. I like to assume a bit of character on it, but it's really just a mechanical device.

So with that out f the way, I expect that the reason that Clara could not get back into the TARDIS is simply because the Doctor has not yet given her the key. Much has been made of this threshold moment in the past, and so far the Doctor does not trust her enough with that talisman. She assumed she could just get in, but found that she could not because the door was locked.

That's what I think too.
Doesn't really explain the inability for Clara to not understand the aliens on the planet, aside from the child.
Still, the child, the other singer and the aliens that were looking for the child (both sets of them) could be understood.
It's a little inconsistent. (8+\

Maybe Doctor Who's just not as good as everyone appears to believe? ;)

Or maybe this was just a particularly poor episode.

Perhaps the "planet" where the festival took place had a sort of built-in universal translator?

Thinking back, did Clara understand all the aliens? The Doctor certainly did, but when he was negotiating with the barking creature for the scooter, Clara was unable to follow the "conversation".

More prosaically, let's just put it down to the "willing suspension of disbelief". We never worried about it in Star Wars. ;)

It is possible that the universal translator simply has limits. The Doctor speaks woof, but the TARDIS couldn't follow it? Perhaps if they'd spoken longer, it (she?) would have started to piece it together.

Or maybe it's not important.

I was also thinking maybe Clara didn't have a key. As has been pointed out, getting the key is sometimes a noted part of becoming a companion.

However, her smiley almost throw-away comment that Tardis maybe didn't like her (slight pause, look to camera) was just a little too clever not to be significant. As Mark says, we know she's some kind of conundrum scattered through time... and Moffat rarely throws away possible plot lines.

I thought that the TARDIS did the universal translation?

If the ep had been better, only Mark would be asking these questions. The rest of us would've simply enjoyed it...

Haven't you seen Hunt For Red October? "Shome of the thingsh in here don't react too well to bulletsch.."

Quite enjoyed that one. Felt a bit 'Old school Who' (with a sprinkling of Alien) plus it's nice to see an old bad guy back who aren't the Daleks or Cybermen.

Yes - know what you mean about “Old School” - I got that vibe too. I enjoyed it too - it had the right level of claustrophobia that old Who did so well.
