What do you think of Stratford-upon-Avon as a place to pop the question? Too busy/noisy/unromantic?

Stratford upon Avon is lovely, there's benches and things by the river :)

Bancroft Gardens by the canal is really lovely now it's all been re-landscaped. There are excellent places for lunch there as well, particularly the One Elm. We lived there for 3 years and Red still works there so we know it intimately :-)

I'll keep Stratford as my back up choice if I can't find anywhere nicer. I tend to visit there every year during one of the bank holidays so I was concerned about it being a less special place. But if I can scout out a suitable spot, I'll use it.

Depending on the type of location you want, you could look at Kenilworth Castle or Whitley Court and Gardens, both of which are English Heritage places and beautiful if you can get the weather. We live in the Midlands too and there's even Tamworth Castle not far away either.

Thought of Kenilworth Castle.

Personally, I'm thinking of a place where we can sit and eat and then go for a leisurely walk by a river or lake (preferably lake). The idea being that we could go there in the future, eat at the same place, see the same sights and stand at the same spot where I proposed. It would need to be relatively secluded so virtually no one around.

Personally, going somewhere that's already significant for both of you would be nicer than somewhere new?

I'd agree with that. Maybe the place you first met, first date, first kiss. That sort of thing

First met at someone's house.
First date kiss was at her house.
First date - I can't recall.

In fact does anyone know how to look up old text messages on iphone? If I go too far back, it just crashes the app.

So Richard Dawkins has (apparently, since I can't find an original quote) been spouting off that fairy tales are awful and we shouldn't tell them to children because, you know, reason and science and stuff.

This is a response from, well, a story teller. It is awesome.
