No, not in the least. In the US, 'R' is one above '18'. Once upon a time, it was only used for adult films. Quite a lot of US cinema chains won't show R rated films and severe retail chains won't sell R rated DVDs either. Prometheus getting an R rating might be pretty bad for it in the US.

Quite what's going on that gets it an R rating in the US and a 15 in the UK, I have no idea...

The thing to remember about the US ratings is that they are only a guide. As long as you are taken by a parent or guardian any age of child can see an 'R' rated film. When I was last in the states, I went to see a showing of The Exorcist and there was a kid there with his mum who can only have been about 8 :o
