Actually, the best solution is the sea equivalent of nature reserves. Not a given period; rather a given area. If enough of the ocean is given to sanctuary, then the problem can be eliminated very simply.

Yes lots of reserve areas will be good. Plus fishermen have to land it all, any throwaways count double against their quota.

Policing that would be a nightmare.

I quite like the idea of policing the reserves via satellite, and enforced by orbital laser canons. Fish love nothing better than a good wreck, and tuna love to eat hapless fishermen

Saw Black Swan last night, not what I was expecting... I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it wasn't that... Interesting and well made, but not exactly my cup of tea.

Just spent some time rewiring the underneath of the computer desk using a cable tidy jobbie. Looks much better now. Just one grey strip hanging down from the back of the Mac to the floor.

adding a 7 segment display (as you might see on a pocket calculator) onto my Minecraft computer, its going to display 2 hexadecimal digits when it is finished, so itll be able to show every output possible with 8-bit binary logic :)

the binary > hex > 7seg decoder design im using is about 32x32x6 excluding the screen. the screen itself isnt too complex, but im having to demolish my current one as there isnt enough room between it and the decoder to wire it up properly :(

the current screen i am using has 3 redstone torches per segment, but i am working on one with just 2 per seg so it isnt as tall and wiring to the decoder will be easier. ive also seen displays that use sticky pistons to push and pull black wool over glowstone to show the active segments, so i might try one of those once i have a working decoder :)

By Carumba, sounds complicated!

In other unrelated news, I'm finally setting up the Android development kit. This step made me chuckle:

Google wrote:
If you're developing on Mac OS X, it just works. Skip this step.

If you're developing on Ubuntu Linux, you need to add a udev rules file that contains a USB configuration for each type of device you want to use for development. In the rules file, each device manufacturer is identified by a unique vendor ID, as specified by the ATTR{idVendor} property. For a list of vendor IDs, see USB Vendor IDs, below. To set up device detection on Ubuntu Linux:

Log in as root and create this file: /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules.

Use this format to add each vendor to the file:
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="0bb4", MODE="0666", GROUP="plugdev"

In this example, the vendor ID is for HTC. The MODE assignment specifies read/write permissions, and GROUP defines which Unix group owns the device node.

Note: The rule syntax may vary slightly depending on your environment. Consult the udev documentation for your system as needed. For an overview of rule syntax, see this guide to writing udev rules.
Now execute:
chmod a+r /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules

got the decoder + torch display working (it can display a 1 or a 0, starting on 2 now :D) already, a real cakewalk compared to some parts of the machine. i think the size of this is going to be a limiting factor though: lots of redstone required, and so many torches lag will probably be a huge factor :/

a little math...

each of the 8 bits requires 32 redstone for buses, along with 8 torches (8 restone) and 8 repeaters (24 redstone). 8 x (32 + 8 + 24) = 512 redstone for the binary buses

the two decoders (they are 4-bit decoders) have 16 buses which are 14 long, with an average of 4 torches. 2 * 16 * (14 + 6) = 640 redstone for the hexadecimal

the two sets of 7 seg carries are 32 redstone long. 2 * 7 * 32 = 448

total: 1600 redstone, not including optimisations, signal repeaters, the display and other buses. i only have 181 :(

30 hours after I started the process, I can now finally take screen-shots of my phone. All I had to do was install the Java SDK (twice, because it seems you need Enterprise Edition), download the Android SDK, download the HTC drivers, download a suitable IDE such as Eclipse, download the plugins for Eclipse, download the updates for the SDK, configure the phone for debugging and voila!

I bet it's not that simple on an iPhone
