I found ibuprofen (or cuprofen for really bad days) and so liable paracetamol alternated every couple of hours got rid of my toothache whilst I was waiting for my wisdom teeth to be removed. If you use cuprofen (don't think it's aspirin based but check first) remember it's no more than 3 a day.

I think that's part of the problem, I'm alternating nurofen plus (with codeine) and paracetamol so I can take them more regularly, it takes about an hour for them to really kick in (during which bonjela, clove oil and orajel) and then I get about 3.5-4 hours relief so I really need to be able to take each thing at least 4 times in a 24 hour period and I always save one dose of something for the wee sma's just in case. So far the nurofen plus seems to be doing a better job than plain nurofen which is probably the codeine, and the clove oil is still the best thing for instant relief from mind-numbing pain, but too much and particularly on an empty stomach makes me vom which doesn't help anything! I've had to change my eating habits to smaller meals and more often to make sure there's something in my stomach whenever I'm taking drugs and to prevent the clove oil from having bad side effects. That said, I've been having much worse episodes at about 8pm every day for a week or so, it peaks to a really bad pain shooting all along and under my jaw, up into the jaw joint itself, then earache and by then I've also got a headache. I've stopped messing around with that level of nasty and just throw clove oil, bonjela, orajel and everything at it until it goes away. I'm going to try a warm TCP rinse before bed tonight as well and see if that helps. I need to sleep better tonight than I did last night As long as all this continues to work I should be ok, which is lucky since apparently there's nothing else to be done.

No, but there's no infection, it's just inflamed from the attempts to pull it out, broken into bits with exposed root and temporary filling which seems to be agravating things but only sometimes.
It's been ok, off and on since May like this and I'm on the cancellation list in case something comes up sooner, but otherwise I just have to cope until the end of September

Why the long wait. Over here emergency stuff like that is normally done within a few days. My fiance had a broken tooth and had an emergency filing for a week, until they could rebuild it properly.

Because british dental services have been largely buggered up by stealth privatisation.

I agree with BigD though. I've had tooth trouble before and had it taken care of on my first visit to the dentist 3 or 4 days after I rang for an appointment.

Sounds like a wait for the hospital dentist to do surgery. The dentist should be able to prescribe something though.

It is a wait for surgery, the dentist couldn't get the tooth out because the base is splayed in the jaw so they're going to have to break it in half to get it out (the tooth, not my jaw.....I hope). The previous attempts of the dentist to get it out are the reason for the problems now, the temp filling that they had to use to fill the cracked and broken bits is irritating the root which is causing the inflammation. From May until last week it's mostly been ok but seems to be deteriorating.
The dentist can't give me anything stronger than ibuprofen and/or paracetamol which do work, but I am taking them pretty much constantly, it's not emergent enough to take to A&E and there doesn't appear to be anything to do but wait and control the pain as much as possible. Now I've found Orajel it's not so bad because I can numb large sections of my face until the ibuprofen kicks in and to be fair, the nurofen plus seems to be doing a good job. Today has been much better and I haven't needed the orajel until about 10 minutes ago. Worst comes to worst I can use clove oil which works pretty instantly.

Haven't read the last few posts but have you tried ringing 111 to speak to someone for stronger painkillers? When I used to do out of hours shifts, I would get requests for painkillers and would fax the prescription through to the nearest chemist to the patient. It was only a couple of days' worth but enough to tide them over.

I've spoken to my GP and the dentist and neither of them will prescribe anything stronger as it's the inflammatory bit that I need and nothing works better than Ibuprofen (apparently) that they can prescribe. I'm ok because it is working but (a legacy from my gall bladder pain) I have tried Solpadol, Codipar and even Tramadol when it's been really bad, but the latter only before bed 'cos it makes me woozy. None of them have done anything particularly spectacular that the nurofen pus hasn't done so I haven't bothered going back. The key seems to be the teething gel, orajel which is brilliant and a TCP rinse before bed although I am keeping the Clove oil on standby. Just hope this carries on working for the next month

It's an opioid analgesic, like Tramadol, I guess I could try tag-teaming it with paracetamol, but only if the pain gets considerably worse than it is. I'm much happier now I've found Orajel, it's Benzocaine and just numbs anything I apply it to, I have to be careful about drinking afterwards so I don't wash it off, but it's brilliant!
