If it was just the hard drive aren't you meant to get a flashing question mark or something (can't find the boot drive) which wouldn't prevent you from booting from a DVD/external hard drive/USB key

Those iMacs like the mbp have 2 graphics chips. The onboard one does the apple logo and the basics then the ATi one kicks in for the rest. It's the ATi one that fails and stops the boot or reinstall process.

Currently stood at Stansted arrivals waiting for Mrs. Bucket.

What the hell are people wearing? So far as I can make out it's hippy meets Paris chic meets Ace Ventura.

Idiots.

Makes sense. The low level stuff, like a memory test, works but nothing greater than that.

I have found my invoice now (plugged my TM backup into the work PC using an HFS reader) so I'll get it down to the repair shop this week.

Look, just because not everyone's sense of dress didn't remain in the 1940s... :P

I look around me today and I often think, my mum used to wear that when I was a kid, or more often, they were uncomfortable when I was young and we used to ridicule those that wore them.

Buying a 'large popcorn' at the cinema - there's really no need for what I was handed, I'm not American.

I don't bother with "large" anything these days. I now tend to go regular/medium on things like popcorn and drinks. What I still do is order lots of things, so I'll have nachos with cheese, salsa and jalapenos, medium salty popcorn (I hate it when others do 50/50 with salt and sweet), a medium drink, and a bag of chocolate. Unsurprisingly, my tummy's always a little dodgy the next day.

Nope. I just don't go often. Maybe 2-3x a year max. I don't eat for most of the day but I'll still exceed calorie intake on the above, even if the soft drink is "diet".

Even 2-3 times a year the food in cinemas costs a fortune and is generally crap.

Bit difficult to take a 3-course meal in these days.

TBH I can't be faffed with lugging stuff in like I used to when I was a student. We'd pop to McDonald's across the road, hide everything in our bags and then go in to the cinema. One person would buy tickets for the group and present them.

Why do you feel the need to eat so much while watching a film? That is something I've never felt the need to do. Some popcorn maybe but that's about it. I don't eat when watching a film at home.
