Yeah but what would the life expectancy be on a PC? I find that macs last longer so if you did a cost per year over the life of the mac vs PC what would it average out at?

For the machines I deal with, the average life expectancy is about 8 years

They've still got machines from the dark ages here at Antenna

I said average age.

The machines connected to the scientific equipment and the colour laser printer still run Windows 95 - nobody bothered to upgrade them... And the colour laser printer comes from 1995 as well. ;)

The monitor is not included in the £4K price tag:

Apple LED Cinema Display (24" flat panel) [+ £649.00]
Apple Cinema HD Display (30" flat panel) [+ £1,199.00]

You should also pay for the OS. For the sake of argument, lets say 7 Ultimate is the nearest competitor. That adds £145.78 Inc VAT

i realise the monitor wasnt included in the Macs price. i added it to show exactly how big the price difference is. :P (identically specced PC + monitor can be had for 1k less than the MacPro)

and Windows 7 Ultimate was included in the price i quoted. last item :)

In my experience, people who buy desktops/workstations use them forever until they are far far far too slow, or give up the ghost...
People who buy laptops generally like the sound of a cheap laptop, these seem to need replacing after ~3 years (they either need it, or their owners just want to upgrade). Most of the people I went to uni with who had PC (specifically Windows) laptops at the beginning of uni came out with a second or third one, most Mac and Linux users had the same machine. Windows has had three revision in that time, as has OS X and Linux has had countless revisions.

PCs have caught up with Macs in terms of capability a long time ago.

As for longevity, I have a desktop from 2002. Since then, I've added ram and hdd, wireless card, another dvd burner and it's required a new psu (to keep up with the power demands).

My laptop is about 6 years old too. Upgraded Ram and HDD. No problems.

All are ibm-compatible win-based machines.

That might be more down to the bloat. OSX and Linux are small OSes and Windows has been getting bigger over the years. I know Windows 7 is shrinking.

I addressed this statement directly and spoke to costs. Caz, if you want something pretty you can keep on paying a premium. Fill your boots. But it IS a big premium, which was what the original question was about.

I think Macs are still a little overpriced.

WIndows has only been getting bigger recently as it's including a lot more drivers. People moaned there was a lack of driver support in Windows so they include loads and they moan it's too big.
OSX on the other hand only needs to support a limited amount of drivers.
Linux is just black magic with drivers

I have two on my desk in front of me and they are lovely. the screens are amazing and watching 1080p film on them is breathtaking. Well worth the money spent. I do not plan on replacing them for a few years.
