Let’s remember that Alien, on it’s Director’s Cut re-release got a 15 certificate. It was originally an X (equivalent to the 18). The newer version had more material added, and no cuts.

I think it would be perfectly acceptable to target a lesser certificate if the story holds firm. The film should not be engineered towards a certificate. We know the subject matter of an Alien film will be more mature, and the imagery will be nightmarish. Scott manages to build a heap of tension in Alien before the first reveal.

Scott himself is (said to be) looking for an 'R' rating though... I'm basically hoping Fox have the sense to let Scott do his own thing, within reason.

A hashed compromise will make the whole 'franchise reboot' bit that much harder - for everyone.

Ridley Scott Sweet On 'Dragon Tattoo's Noomi Rapace For 'Alien' Prequel

Image

20th Century Fox and director Ridley Scott have just about completed meetings with actresses to find the Ripley-like heroine for the 3D Alien prequel. I'm told that, so far, Scott's favorite is The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo star Noomi Rapace. The other names being whispered range from Carey Mulligan to Abbie Cornish, Natalie Portman and Tron: Legacy star Olivia Wilde, the latter of whom met this week. Deadline revealed early this month that Rapace -- who got the female lead in Sherlock Holmes 2 -- was a possibility for Alien. Now, the studio will be heavily involved in the ultimate decision, and I'm told that Rapace's English is a consideration. Stay tuned.

If I had to bet, I'd say Portman (who Fox are allegedly pushing for) hasn't got the chops, so...

It's also been rumored that Scott is pursuing for a role Lance Henriksen, who did not appear in "Alien" but did appear as Charles Bishop Weyland in "Alien Vs. Predator," as well as the android Bishop in "Aliens" and Bishop's creator Michael Bishop in "Alien3."

So the Alien prequel... isn't a prequel?

EXCLUSIVE: First, it started out as an Alien Prequel. But then it morphed into something "more original", an insider tells us -- even though Hollywood kept referring to the project as "The Alien Prequel" right up until today when Twentieth Century Fox officially announced the new Ridley Scott production as Prometheus is now bound for worldwide release on March 9th, 2012. Returning to science fiction filmmaking for the first time since Blade Runner, Scott will direct this epic. Of the five major roles to be cast, Noomi Rapace is the first actor signed to star (as "Elizabeth Shaw"), and we hear that Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron are both circling the other big female lead ("Vickers").

The initial draft of the script was written by Jon Spaihts (The Darkest Hour) from Ridley’s idea. Damon Lindelof (Lost, Star Trek) and Scott have since been working together on the current version which has expanded the story into new directions. We hear they were instructed to "go off and come up with what they want" using the 'Alien DNA'. Though story details are being closely guarded, Ridley explained the outlines of the film and its genesis as follows: “While Alien was indeed the jumping off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place. The keen fan will recognize strands of Alien’s DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative. I couldn't be more pleased to have found the singular tale I'd been searching for, and finally return to this genre that's so close to my heart.”

Says Lindelof: "In a world flooded with prequels, sequels and reboots, I was incredibly struck by just how original Ridley's vision was for this movie. It's daring, visceral and hopefully, the last thing anyone expects. When I sat in a movie theater as a kid, feet raised off the floor for fear that something might grab my ankles, I never dreamed in my wildest imagination I would one day get to collaborate with the man responsible for it. Working alongside him has been nothing short of a dream come true."

Swedish actress Noomi Rapace landed the scientist's role after Scott saw her portrayal of fictional Lisbeth Salander in the film The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo as well as the rest of the Steig Larssen. All Fox would say is that the other roles "would be cast soon".

It's starting to sound more promising to me now :) , though a lot of directors don't seem to know what role to put Jolie in, so my personal preference would be Theron...

That's because she's a versatile actor.
Like her or not, she is a very good actress that can play strong, vulnerable, heroic or victim with equal ease on screen.
I'd be happy with either of these two actresses in the film, and Noomi Rapace was bloody brilliant in the trilogy of Steig Larssen films, so I'm very happy that she's signed on to the cast.

That's what I was getting at, it's not her fault (I like her in every sense!), it's just she seems to be an embarrassment of riches for some directors, even Eastwood from what I saw.

There seems to be an even split in the movie sites I read as to whether Prometheus ties into the Alien series or not :? :? :?

No studio accountant is going to let him NOT put an Alien in it. If he doesn’t, they might as well raid Warners for the Babylon 5 account books.

My concern is that he’s going to cock up monumentally. I hope not - after all he is revisiting something he was deeply involved in creating, and the directors cut showed that he’d not lost touch with it. There is a lot riding on this - it could be a career burning project.
