I think of myself as European nowadays.
That's one thing I'd never consider myself to be. Even if I moved to anouther EU country and started to identify myself as one of them, I'd call myself Spanish or German (or whatever, depending on which country it was), but never European. I just don't regard that as a nationality. I don't even see it as a geographical thing any more, just a political thing. Saying I was European would be like saying I bow to the power of Brusels rather than Westminster.

I've friends all over Europe and have lived in several countries. For me, it has nothing to do with nationality or politics, just I feel at home in "Europe", whether that be the south of France, Italy, Czech or Germany.

Scottish born and bread. I do live in England now though.
The census should be a true reflection of the makeup of the country's population so if the individual nationalities of the UK's constituent countries are there then I see no problem at all with selecting one of the individual countries. To me the British option is most appropriate for people who have been accepted as British citizens and I don't mean that to be in any way derogatory or demeaning. Having a decent idea of where people are born and then go within the UK would be fascinating IMHO.

It would have been entertaining to have seen a Northern English/Southern English option just to find out how far south people in England think 'the North' starts (and I don't mean geographically, I mean the state of mind). I suspect it would be a lot further south than the geographical centre of England.

So anyone who has a British passport then.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

No, people who have applied (and so intentionally chosen) to become British citizens as opposed to those who are citizens by accident of birth.

Why is it an awful word?

Because it's divisive for a lot of people. Not me, I don't care. But I do see the problems that the word causes.

I'm quite happy to be "British", and I think people, born and raised within the British Isles, who find the word divisive are narrow-minded idiots.

British isn't the divisive word, English is. But there are a lot of reasons why such distinctions can be problematic. Not everybody thinks like you, or me, or anyone else here, and it's important to remember that.

I'd go with the "passport = British" thing myself. As I mentioned in a previous post, being a British citizen affords me certain rights that I consider myself fortunate to have.

Let's start with Bratty and work on to people with less extreme, but similar viewpoints, shall we...?

This is supposed to be the United Kingdom of Great Britain.

So it's Scottish nationalist bigotry and historical ignorance that's divisive then surely?
