When I'm working I shave every morning, I think the longer you spend, and slower you go, the better the outcome. I think you should try and see it as a relaxing ritual in the morning, otherwise you end up scraping a dull blade quickly over dry skin.

I don't shave every day for exactly that reason.

steam-proof mirrors in the shower, and wet shave there.

Bic basic disposable razors and water. As long as you keep the skin wet you shouldn't get burned.

Everything else is a con IMO.

I actually use one of these.

Anyone got any tips to stop getting a post-shave rash or irritation when the stubble grows back?

I find the better I lather up and leave the cream on longer before shaving (to soften the hairs) and also using the soap quite warm helps. If you don't soften the hairs then the razor will snag on each one.

After washing my face with warm, soapy water, I usually soak a flannel with clean warm/hot water and put it against my face for a bit to soften the hairs (it also helps the hairs to stand on end). I generally don't shave for a few weeks (anything from two weeks to two months) and rarely get irritation.

I couldn't agree more. One of the reasons I like shaving with my straight razor and soap with brush is because of all the rigmarole of sharpening the razor, cleaning my face, softening the hairs, etc. I find it generally helps to be a bit slower with the straight razor too, though I can do it fairly fast, I've nicked myself quite badly on a couple of occasions, mainly under the nose.

Been browsing around for cheap brushes and soap, and Amazon frequently came out top, I got a top quality brush and soap dish for £20, some sites were asking closer to £40. So anyway, it's a little luxury on payday, and I suppose in the long run it will work out cheaper than getting cans of foam.

It's scary, but I'm with Bratty on shaving with just a blade.

I usually shave directly after showering and my face is warm and clean, run the blade under the water for a couple of seconds, then shave.

I used to get rashes and irritated skin, when I used shaving foam, so for the last 20 odd years, I haven't used it.

Electric shaver here (Braun 380). It certainly shaves a lot closer than my old electric shaver.
I started out with dry shaving when I was a teenager. Didn't get on terribly well when I was wet shaving as my neck came out in a serious rash although I did find that switching to hard soap and a brush helped a lot (Wlikinson Sword stuff all the way IIRC).

Shaving oil by Somerset's and 25p disposables, which last up to a month, shaving every other day. The oil works out at about £10 per year.

I have horribly thick facial hair that seems to srout back in hours after shaving

I have to trim it back with a beard trimmer first before I get another whack at it after a shower and still it's stubbly

Tempted to get a proper razor as anything other than my current King Of Shaves one gives me terrible razor burns on my neck, the KoS oil is good but I don't get as close a shave, the gel I get closer but get nicks and razor burns

I've used Gillette Sensitive Gel for years, but on the odd occasion when I've run out, I've used shower gel and I swear it works much better. I shave in the shower, so there's no question of the skin not being wet enough, but I always rub my hand over my face when I've "finished" shaving to find the bits I've missed and I would say that I'm almost certain that shaving under running water is better than gel/foam. :?

As to my razor, I've had Wilkinson Sword for years. First, the Protector, then the Protector 3D, but WS stopped making 3D blades: the 3D Diamond were brilliant and I don't half miss them.

I've now got a Quattro and tbh, I think it's rubbish. Not only has the stud that holds the head assembly into the handle fallen out and gone missing, the blade keeps falling off and the blades are [LIFTED]

I'm thinking about Gillette Fusion, and I noticed as I came out of Sainburys yesterday, that they are a third off- although that MIGHT have been ONLY the battery powered one which was definitely on the poster. It was such a quick glance that I can't be 100% certain that the ordinary one is also discounted.

I've also got one more weird thing to mention- I know that you are supposed to shave downwards- I can't. I can pass the razor ten times down my face and the fuzz is still there. Shave upwards once (or twice) and it's gone!

I find any more than two blades and I can't get under my nose properly.

Well I have a beard so no real shaving issues. I use a foil attachment on my clippers to stop it spreading all the way up my cheeks
