The last couple of hospitals I've worked at have incinerators which incinerate tissues and all hazardous waste. At least one was able to utilitise the energy to power the hospital (think it was used to heat water or something).

Anyway, looked it up. A human body can not be a "possession" so in theory you can't "own" it but you can be in duty of looking after it. Sometimes, a family will claim to have nothing to do with a patient and then it falls to the Local Authority to dispose of it. Generally gets cremated.
