I spotted an MGB a couple of months ago, going for £2k. I'd hate to think what was wrong with it.

It's an MGB. That's what's wrong with it. :P

Seriously, they're not worth huge amounts unless they're in Concours condition. £2k is probably reasonable for a slightly tatty one.

John, what sort of thing are you looking for? Sports car? Open top tourer (like the Beauford)? I'm assuming it'll just be for fun, weekend type use? And what's you're max budget?

The budget is unknown as I'd need to decide on a car by car basis, and up until about a minute ago I liked the Beauford type, but then I saw...

Now I'd be tempted by one of these.
Given the originals were racers, getting a better fit and finish shouldn't be too challenging.

And.. WOW!

It would probably be used almost daily as I only live about 5 miles away from work, and we tend to do our long distant driving in the wifes Picasso.

Take a hint: If you have the space, get something else for commuting.
Lots of 5 mile trips will not do a classic any favours, it'll run badly while it's cold, and the monotony of the daily commute will take away the fun factor of having a car like that.
If you get an old enough car, tax will be free, and if you get classic insurance, that won't cost you anything much (I think my last premium was about £90).
Buy an old banger for going to work. ;)

Getting to work shouldn't be a problem, as it is actually within walking distance, (if it means getting the car I want I'll catch the bloody bus if I have to!) and since most of my shifts happen to coincide with Mrs. V, who works about 10 minutes walking distance away from me, but yeah, I see what you mean about losing the "fun" factor.

Ok, what do you guys think of these as an alternative to the Beauford...

HF3000

Hawk 289

Hawk 427

Or any other suggestions?

Grrr, the death of many a 164 those. Still, at least I've managed to get spares off a guy that builds these.

It is a cheeky question, but you'll probably get an even cheekier answer!!

Very nice. Much less understated than the 427, it's a very pretty car.

I don't know, it actually seems to be something of a babe magnet as it seems to fall under the 'cute' category. There was a girl in halls who drove one and she was seriously fine.

As I currently own a Citroen C3, getting a 2CV seems to be defeating the object somewhat.

Anyway, the boss lady like the Hawk 289 and now it's just a case of when I can get it. Seven years from now, she says... I say cobblers!

Time will tell... Mwahahaha ;) :P

Hmm, probably an annoying Feminist Vegan with opinions about leather shoes.

Are you going to build it yourself? If so, you can get it in installments. Chassis this year, gearbox next year, and so on... ;)
