I have never bothered with online shopping - Three mainstream supermarkets within a 1-2 mile radius means it is ery easy for me to nip in the car and scoot over.

I have always been tempted. I might even give it a go.

If the cost of driving to the supermarket exceeds £3 or so then it can save you money as well.

To get a £3 charge for delivery you'll have to get your stuff delivered at a pretty inconvenient time. Most of the 'reasonable' delivery slots in the online stores when I've used them have been 5-6 quid. That means in an average car you're only going to save money on 'carriage costs' by going yourself if your supermarket is about 20 miles away.

'Course, if you're OK with having your stuff delivered at 11PM on a Tuesday night, then the saving is there to be made.

Sainsbury's is free delivery all orders over £100 mid-week, and some of the cheap slots at Tesco and Asda are very convenient for me.

Tesco also have a scheme where for £10 a month, all deliveries are covered. Useful if you order every week, which I don't at the moment because it's just for 1 person. A family could easily justify that I imagine.

But yes, prime-time delivery costs more.

They have a quarterly option which is even cheaper. Great for families though who order regularly. Though why not order really huge amounts and get it all delivered once a quarter?

1. Storage space - I have a tiny kitchen and freezer.
2. Fresh food doesn't keep that long!

I do have a couple of month's supply of staple goods so I'd be fine in a brief zombie scenario, but I do like my fresh bread, salad and fruits.

Yes I have a similar situation but I get all my fresh stuff from small local Independant traders. So can walk for almost everything else.

Did anyone read that Argos are finally ditching the catalogue? They'll be closing 10% of stores, introducing wifi and people will be able to browse the goods on computers in store. Makes sense to me. Don't know why they didn't put PCs in stores earlier. Even the job centre is computerised.

Also Costa won't be opening on Totnes. Despite having planning approval there was a petition of nearly 6000 saying they didn't want the chain in their town and they have listened to public opinion. Makes a change.

Argos - they've had touch screens for some time now in Birmingham. Maybe a year or more? Again there's still a laminated catalogue which I use to look for items (far quicker and means I can look at alternatives on the same page) and I then verify on the touchscreen.

The one I went in last (and that was some time ago) did. You still had the catalogue, but instead of going to a till with a person, you used a touchscreen system to enter the codes of the items you wanted and paid by credit card swipe. Then you went off to collect the item which, admittedly, had been picked from the warehouse by hand.

Going entirely electronic seems a relatively straightforward step from there.

Just been to Argos to buy a new kettle. They have installed touchscreens along with the laminated catalogues. With Argos, I reserve online and pick up in the store.

I do the same.

I was in recently and they still had the catalogues. Think I've used a touch screen in the past to check if items are in stock.

I think it's pretty average really... as in, your average town is pretty s**t!

If they were going to give the Midlands an enema, they'd insert it in Northampton.

It manages to make Coventry seem attractive.

I like the Argos catalogue. I still think there's value in it. I'd certainly shop less at Argos without it. The catalogue is their only differentiator.

There are still many who do not have access to the internet so the catalogue suits them perfectly. By dropping the catalogue they abandon those customers.

It's not going anywhere soon; apparently 85% consult their catalogue before buying.

Well they would be really foolish to drop the catalogue. I have used it as well as a price guide as well. IIRC all DWP offices have copies for the loans that they give. If you ask for £100 for a pram, they look through the Argos catalogue to find the cheapest and only offer loans based on that amount.
