Don't mess with the police. Unlike here, they don't take any [LIFTED]. I only just managed to persuade them not to arrest a coworker who wanted to finish his drink at kicking out time.

I could never card count or do well at a casino, so prefer the odd try on one of the mega jackpot one armed bandits but that would be my limit in Vegas. If you know what you are doing it might be a different matter, though I know my limits.

I'm pretty sure it's an "offense" not to have your passport on you just about everywhere.
But I've never needed it in the States over three seperate trips or in nearly two years of working in Europe. Drivers licence always works.
Virgin would be my choice for the ultimate stage experience. THey go direct. Flights are generally cheap. Otherwise, the cheap carriers will expect you to get a 2-3 hour domestic from LA, Denver, Cincinati, ATL or some such. Delta, American, whatever, it's all hassle. Virgin is worth paying for.
Food drinks and tips is roughly 10 bucks for breakfast 15 for lunch or 20 for dinner.

+1 for the 'fly direct' option. I've had and known of more hassles/luggage lost through relatively few internal US connections than I've seen in years of flying long haul. A lot of the carriers just don't seem to care much and some of the planes have flight manuals in latin...

If you don't fly direct, make sure you have a long connection. The two times I've suffered American immigration queues, it's taken about two hours each time. Then you'd have to get through security etc again.

My wife hates America and won't ever go there after her experiences transferring at lax from New Zealand to heathrow. She was particularly annoyed as she wasn't even staying in the states. Don't think they like foreigners much, which is funny for a country of immigrants.

I always get the red carpet treatment when I was visit the US. They love the Brits and love the accent. One night even had drinks bought for us all evening by some stock brokers.

On my one and only trip to the USA, I was sidelined at each security checkpoint because of my asthma inhaler. It was the aluminium disc in the thing that was setting off the metal detectors, and even if I put it in the tray for the x-ray machine, I was still questioned about it. I even had to explain to one of their military officers what the thing was AND take it to bits. You would think that they see these things every day, but apparently not. They even seemed to not like me leaving the country without a round of questions about where I had been. I don’t think I’ll be going back.

Money: Take as much as you would for a UK holiday. Personally I take a couple of hundred dollars as cash and then either use my credit card / go to an ATM Flights: Direct if poss and Virgin prices are OK - can be cheaper to do a Virgin package holiday than just a flight - check on their web site Police - no problem - and in all my times in travelling to the US a UK driving licence (Photo) has always been OK once in the country

Immigration a few years back got a really bad rep. However following a load a of bad publicity they have got a lot better esp at major tourist entry points.

Right, just to update. Flight's booked w/ BA and it's direct. I wonder whether I should take more. I have a mastercard credit card, and a visa debit card. I hope the ATMs allow me to draw more cash if required. That's on our list of things to do Given that I'm a guy and don't carry a handbag, what's the best way to carry a passport? I'm probably gonna wear trouser-shorts but wouldn't trust the pockets. One of those bum-bags? Been given mixed advice - some say stay on the strip where it's safe, and others have said explore a little. This is a stag week so essentially we will be going out at night regularly, but I hope we do get to explore and do sightseeing stuff during the day. I have a feeling with such a large group that we may end up breaking into two smaller groups.

you can get flat money wallets that you tie like bum bags under your shirt. Also good for extra cash, hotel keys etc.
