Yup that's something I've learned when I was researching the issue.

Then (as cheesy as it sounds) follow your heart. If you're ready to marry this person then you should know them well enough to know what they'd like in a ring and somewhere special to propose. Don't over complicate it by trying too hard or there's just more things that could go wrong and spoil your happy moment

Tell me about it. As I drove into work, I found myself thinking about hiring an entire boat at Stratford so I can propose to her whilst on the River Avon.

Now obviously I don't know you outside of the forum and only know what you've told us about your other half but I'd say that's probably slightly showy and potentially an uncomfortable situation (as in you're in the middle of a river with nowhere to escape if it either didn't go as planned or need a second to think). Based on her bringing a picnic to your office why not have a picnic by the river Avon? It'd be a nice place, a relaxed atmosphere, you can put the ring in the picnic basket for her to find and she wouldn't be put on the spot.

Good idea. Ask the hotel to prepare the room for you while you're out as well?

Nobody is saying you have to carry anything that costs £10k. Then again, nobody is saying that you don't. Your partner should know this in advance and plan accordingly. Everyone in here is so hung up on the cost! It's not the material value that matters, hopefully you'll all learn this in time. Mark

Sorry cant remember - it was over 20 yrs ago I just went into the Jewellery Quarter and went into a couple of the smaller shops until I found one I liked. I then chatted to the guy and agreed a rough spend so that he would pull out diamonds within my price range Its something you do together in the shop - do it with a bottle of fizz and its very romantic. I already knew roughly what sort of stuff she liked so had things lined up - but it allowed her to have a unique ring

Yup agree which is why I was only toying with the idea of it. I'm not an ostentatious guy and have always preferred privacy and the shadows over showing off and being in the limelight. Love the picnic idea. Still thought of doing it properly and going down on one knee and pulling the ring out. TBH I agree with this but at the same time, there has to be something sensible. Otherwise I could easily see myself selling the car and buying a £30k ring with nowhere to live and no way to get to work. But at the same time, I don't want to get a crappy ring. Never mind. Maybe that's what I need to do.

Good. Just be sensible about it and you'll be fine. Mark

As someone who's been single most of his life, this thread is stressing me the [LIFTED] out.
Still, I'll just go with the 'follow your heart' type advice. Your first impulse is usually the right one. Do whatever feels like the right thing to do is.
