I'm going to formulate my plans over the next week whilst on holiday.
Thanks for the advice it'll come in handy.

Self-employment was the way of the past, and I believe it could be the way of the future. The best thing about self-employment is the "self" bit. As for your specific situation, I couldn't possibly tell you anything useful. All I'll say is, everyone I know who is self-employed not only really loves it (most of the time!), but they're also a different kinda person to the norm. I like that. Go for it and have a great holiday!

As mentioned by leeds, the old employer needs to be very careful about legal action with regards to libel. Therefore when previous employers are asked for a reference then the majority of times all they will say is that they worked for for company x for y time in z position.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

When giving references, it can be written honestly to be read another way. We had positions advertised last year and there was no interview process, just a manager's (read "supervisor's") report on each applicant.
One of the people who applied, you could have written about him- "has been the only person in (position X) in this area for the last four years" suggesting that he has held the fort in this position all on his lonesome for that length of time. This would be honest, but would not reflect the truth.
The scheme- such as it was- that he was part of was largely defunct. and while others in the same position had taken it upon themselves to carry the ideals forward, he had done [LIFTED] all for three of those four (or so) years.
I am sure that with some creative writing, you could make a positive a negative without actually libelling anyone, but saspro does have the advantage, that if his customers like him, but not the company, they can largely ignore any crap from his employer and he could then ask those companies for references when approaching other organisations that he has not previously worked with.

References don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world.

It depends very much on the employer and more importantly which job branch you are working. It can be incredibly important. I got a great reference from my previous job - along with my boss saying that he was sorry that they couldn't fulfill all of the promises they made when they hired me, along with an offer of my job back if the new one didn't work out...

Currently going through the motions of setting things up. Website's in development along with company formation, then on to the marketing etc. Haven't updated here as work's been busy & slightly better (mainly as I've been out of the office & on holiday) Will update more when the site template's done.
