Ugh. That, to me, says "I don't actually own a suit and didn't think it was worth buying one for this interview, so this will have to do". Works OK when you're 17 and trying to get a job stacking shelves in tescos, but that's about it. If you're going to do the trousers/shirt thing, then lose the tie. It'll just make you look like a tryhard otherwise.

Haha, he's going for a techi job.
Everyone knows, techi's don't DO suits. EVER.
It's more practical.
In any case, as long as he don't wear jeans and a t-shirt, and wears something slighting formal, he'll be alright.
They are interested in HIM not his clothes.

Of course, but it's different rules for interviews. It's all about presenting yourself as best you can. I don't think anyone is going to worry that you won't be able to dress down for the actual job, but it's a good idea to be able to show how well you can scrub up. After all, there's always the possibility of having to go and meet new clients occasionally and so on, and it's good to know you're at least capable of looking the part if it demands it.

I don't think I've ever interviewed a bloke who wasn't wearing a suit. hate to think how many people I've interviewed over the years.
Hint - if you want to take your jacket off at te interview ask first.
I'd have no problem if the bloke was in smart casual as long as it wasn't for a senior position.
Always wear a suit for interviews myself but rarely after that. Board presentations and that sort of thing require them but generally as long as its smart its more important that people are comfortable IMHO.

I guess really the point I'm making, and IMO (as you know, I have spent years as both interviewer and interviewee) I have never heard of someone not getting the job because they wore a suit. On the other hand, there have been plenty of occasions where the first impression has made all the difference, and as Redeyes said, no-one will ever doubt your ability to "dress down" if that's the job requirement, but demonstrating that you can successfully "suit up" is a worthwhile exercise. If it helps, the Directors and Exec team at Speedo always come in wearing suits on days when they are interviewing, even though they normally wear jeans and shirts (and in some cases flip-flops) when they're just bumming around the office. On reflection, you should have dressed up in the outfits, had KW take pictures and then posted them with the poll, so we could make an informed decision.

We had a guy come for an interview in trousers + jumper, he technical skill wasn't the best, though within the boundaries we were looking for, but another guy with similar knowledge who was wearing a suit got the job. I don't know why my boss did this, it may have been because the second guy made the effort...

Always wear a suit. If you might end up visiting customers then they like to see you in a suit.
Bish, I'm a techie and I wear a suit to work (although usually without a tie). I'm usually customer facing and act as their account manager as well. Always looks good to a customer when you're charging £750 a day for you being there.

I'm a techie too, but I don't wear a suit. Only unless I have someone coming in to sort something out. All I'm saying is, sometimes, you can overdress for something.

For any vaguely serious job, I don't think you could ever call a suit 'overdressing', and I would always tend to err on the side of caution.
No one is going to not give you the job because you are wearing a suit, they might not if you aren't.
And remember JJ, every girl's crazy about a sharp dressed man.

I always thought that line was "Every girl's crazy about a Shark Pressed Ham" which makes much more sense to me.
