In Brighton they sell more than 170 permits for every 100 parking spaces. So it is still a lottery if you actually get a parking space.

The best thing about having a road bike is that "chavs like to steal the tickets from behind my windscreen"...

I'm not sure they actually make much money, I think it's just a job creation scheme.

Sorry, I meant council parking, no doubt in my mind the hospitals make an enormous profit. When my Mum was in intensive care for a month it cost me an absolute fortune.

It is all a scam. It is a form of stealth tax, just leaving the NHS to collect it.

300k to manage car parks in a single borough. What is it, valet parking?

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

That's got to be an epic lie. It's not as if the car parks are absolutely perfect is it? I mean, the carpark at College has more craters in it than the moon. The potholes can easily swallow small children. But yet it costs 300k to maintain them?
I smell something that comes out of the back of a bull...

Let me attempt to explain the finer details of Local Government budget manipulation: There has to be a figure set aside for the upcoming year if you want to be able to get anything done. Once approved the new financial year is off to a great start. Now, if the car park does not need any work on that particular year, then you have to use the money or you won't be able to claim against the budget for next year. So you end up with £300k to play with. Many pens can be bought for this amount (and probably are) so when word gets around the department that you have some spare cash, you get many requests. It's accepted practice within Local Authorities to 'fudge' budgetry issues but in general the money is actually used for projects or gritting etc. Of course, what you end up with at the end of the financial year is book-keeping that states £300k has been spent on the car park and yet no work appears to have been done! Simples.... Al

Just had the same issue trying to find parking for the Police station. Then remembered the 20 minute waiting bays at the station. Would have been ideal for yesterday, too. Doh!

I think waiting impllies that you stay with the car, but if I go to the station I normally park the car to see someone off or arrive.

Convertibles as well! My brother had an Austin Healey Sprite and the first time he parked in town, some nonce stole his parking ticket!
