What if we changed the definitions and descriptions of some of the existing boards - the Mac hardware board already contains loads of threads about the iPhone for instance, so maybe change it's title to just Apple hardware? You'd maybe have to decide if there's a difference between apps and software, before deciding what the Mac software thread should cover, I dunno... We could possibly wind up with the same amount of boards but slightly more defined and succinct. Might have the side effect of drawing more people to particular boards they wouldn't normally go into. Of course, the opposite could also be true

One of the main reasons I suggested setting up a gadgets/mobile computing board was to strip out all the s*dding iPhone/iPad stuff from the Mac boards. I go in there to see if there's any interesting new Mac stuff and it's all about the iPhone/iPad. As these are both cross-platform and, IMHO, in the same vane as blackberries <insert suitable pie joke or picture> and other smart phones it makes sense to me to separate them out for folks who have them or are considering getting them to talk about to their hearts content. Merging the Internet and Networking boards could indeed be a plan, if the Internet isn't all about networking then I don't know what is. I'd also suggest that Open Source could realistically be merged into PC software (unless I missed something and there are huge swathes of folk running Linux distros on Macs).

I know Bally has put Linux on his Mac...I run Linux in virtual machines on my Mac... Most of all, I asked there to be an Open Source board because "Open Source" does not mean blasted Linux! I wanted it for Linux, BSD, OpenSolaris, KDE, GNOME, open source development, etc... Plus, there is the age old argument that a Mac is a P ersonalC omputer...So why don't we just merge the Mac boards with the PC boards? EDIT: Sorry, just realised that sounded very much like a rant...

Yes but that they are hardware specific. Maybe an Apple board for all apple kit and maybe even merge in any OSX software issues into an general Apple forum?

Legally, yes. Practically, no... Several members of this forum have run OS X on non-Apple kit.

Whatever you do, don't merge those two! I won't be able to handle that. I can't imagine myself going into the PC hardware that is my retreat from anything Apple and finding loads of Apple threads in it. Seriously that is just travesty to even suggest that I am already finding it difficult with ipads in TMP You know that I lose it sometimes and post something in there and the Egg sees it and he calls me names and he posts ugly pictures of himself

I suspected that one (Open Source) might get a response from someone As for Macs being PC's I think it's fair to say that, in this context, most people are reading PC as Windows PC. As the underlying hardware for Windows, Mac OS X and many forms of Unix is x86 based these days it can't be distinguished by the underlying hardware so if you want to merge Mac and PC hardware then you'd also have to lose Open Source as it's all running on pretty much the same kit. I'd suggest keeping Mac and PC hardware boards separate and maybe re-naming PC software as Windows Software for clarity and keeping Open Source for non Windows or OS X software. Merge the Internet and Networking boards. Programming stays as is as it's a completely different focus from the other Software boards. Not sure about Sports. I normally think of that going with In The News (like it does on the TV).
