another good bank is Lloyds. They closed down my student account when it was £900 overdrawn. They asked for repayment and I replied saying I was unemployed so I couldnt pay back more than £5 a month and I had moved. They replied to my new address saying they were assessing my situation and that was the last I heard from them. :D That was 17 years ago
Suprinsingly i dont go anywhere near Lloyds again

I'm with Lloyds, I have my current account with them. Never had an issue with them, the staff at the branch by the office are good for the most part. They do keep wanting me to upgrade my account but they never mention that it will cost £10 or so when I ask if there is anything else I should know.

I also have savings with Nationwide which I opened up recently.

I've been with barclays for 5 years now, started with a student account then went onto a current account - staff are always very helpful and i've never had a problem so i've never needed to switch bank.

I opened a student account with them over 20 years ago. I still have the free £500 overdraught limit, although they do charge interest now. I chose them because none of the other banks would let me open an account on a Saturday, and I couldn't get to town in the week.

The only trouble I had, was they shut my local branch. You guessed it; it's now a fancy wine bar. It's called "The Old Bank"

A+L are generally good (their website's tragic though), but I expect them to get worse now that they're owned by the same group as the utterly retarded Abbey - I wouldn't have wished that lot on Hitler :x

Another to add to my list!

Worst bank: RBS

Worst bank = Halifax.
The scummy bastards diddled me out of a grand and a half worth of shares when they demutualised.
I've refused to have anything to do with them ever since.

Been with Barclays for 28 years (personal banking) and now just about to switch mortgage business there too. They've always been supportive when we've been strapped, and their staff are very helpful IMO. Golden ISA pays good interest as well.

Abbey are a bunch of idiots, and they're just about to lose my mortgage business.

I did bank with NatWest a long time ago, but only because one of their cashiers had the biggest pair of tits you ever did see...

They also do a regular savings account at about 7%, but both are limited. The ISA won't let you transfer funds from another ISA, and the savings account is limited to £250 a month. Basically, they're "loss leaders" to get you in the door, but still very worth while.

Yesterday I received a letter from RBS saying that they are selling their branches to Santander and that my branch is included in the sale

I was very happy with RBS' services (except the fact they nearly imploded as bank two years ago  ) so I am not pleased that they will move my account to the worst bank on the planet. Apparently it will takes 12-18 months to complete the sale so for obvious reasons I will be moving my account and had to digg out this thread.

Until recently I've had (my other) bank account with HSBC but they've cancelled it because I wasn't using it. I am looking to move to First Direct.

19 years with Barlays according to OP, but now 20 due to thread resurrection. No problems with them whatsoever.

I had a look at them but
£100 welcome gift
£250 interest free overdraft
and ability to pay in cash in HSBC branches is tipping me towards the First Direct
