But if the population has an odd number of people (which there is, presumably, a 50% chance of that being the case), then in actual fact, it will be just under half of the population that will have below average intelligence.

Would that not really be based on the median rather than the average, working on a skewed distribution, when intelligence is usually measured using a normal distribution calculated from a population as a whole?

Median rather than the average? Isn't that a bit like saying using the carrot rather than a vegetable?

That would be Mean and Average.

As I understood, it there were three sorts of average; mean, median and mode, and using the word 'average' does not specifically imply any one of them?

You mean Median and Mean, which are both averages.

I have no idea what the distribution of intelligence is, but according to the 15 seconds of derivative research I've just done it is indeed normal. Therefore, the median and mean are the same, n'est pas?

I was meaning Median and Average as being different, rather than lumbs suggestion that Median and Average are the same.

How did I get into this now, it's bringing back far too many memories of measuring the statistical validity of IQ tests, questionnaires..... :?

That is not actually what I meant, nor the only way to read what I said. But ah well, it can go hang.

:?

What you didn't mean average meant mean or that median meant what you mean, or that my meaning was meant that the average wasn't the median.

:? :D

Lol, I think it should be a general rule that thinking beyond 'oooh, tea' on a Sunday is a bad thing.

Know what I mean? :D

All this talk of statistics has made me flip. I'm going to decapitate me some daisies with a blunt implement. Oh yeah, violence is good ;)
