That is why the supermarkets are not always the cheapest. They make their money because people are lazy of not organised.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

I guess I spend about £15 a week on food, but it varies a lot depending on how much entertaining I do. The most expensive item is usually the tomatoes because I'm fussy about them, but I spend far more on booze and fags than on food...
Since I've been working mostly in an office, I've been relying heavily on on-line shopping. My favourite is probably Asda because of their fantastic substitution policy. They only charge the price of what you ordered, so you rarely lose out. Last time, they didn't have the 500g of chicken breast I wanted so they gave me 1Kg.
I also use Sainsbury and Tesco on-line, basically whichever one emails me the best special offers and free delivery. Sainsbury is always free delivery on certain days and they also stock items the other supermarkets don't such as Tahini. Certain own-brands are much better than others too, so I stock up on the best from whichever I order from.
I do have to "top up" now and then. Annoyingly, tomorrow is now looking like one of those days and I seriously don't know how I'm going to fit it in to my schedule... but I must have booze for the weekend!

I forgot to add my spend. I think it's about 70 quid a week. Been saving a fortune since my wife's no longer on the wine and gin!

I will agree and much of the time I own brand is as good as the top brands. Though it is a matter of trial and error.

When I used to live alone down south, either I shopped at asda or tescos - the former being closer but the latter being better in terms of variety. My weekly shop used to be near identical with once a month when i bought more stuff like washing powder or washing up liquid etc. My bill would be anywhere from £30-60.
Now I'm back home living with the 'rents, weekly shop is £70-80. Some of this is from stuff that I would love to buy in bulk eg cereal bars, lucozade sports drinks etc - no idea where from though. We tend to shop at either morrisons or asda - tesco/sainsburys being too far.

We do M&S for the weekly shop (£120-ish) Sainsbury's home delivery every month or so for the non-perishable big/heavy stuff (£140-ish), topped up as required with flying visits to Asda, Tesco or Morrisons (whatever I'm passing) for water, fizzy drinks, booze etc... (£60 or so a time) - that's for a family of four, two teenagers with hollow legs etc.. etc..

Back in Camberley I'd get off the bus from work with my camping bag, head to Lidl then Aldi and finish in Tesco. I would try not to spend much more that £15 with £20 being my absolute maximum to spend. No, back in Aber, it's a mix between Lidl and Iceland with the occasional trip to Morrisons. I'm not sure how Morrisons can be so expensive. We generally only buy own brand stuff, and just covering the floor of the trolly seems to come to £30 We spend around £30-£40 a week on food I reckon. This includes a hefty amount of milk (Faye has pints of tea with ~25% milk) and loads of diet coke (she goes through about nine litres a week). My biggest spend is probably cheese or something sweet like cake, though recently I've been getting neither as the pennies have been getting less and less...

Weekly Sunday shop at Tesco. Sometimes Sainsbury's and very rarely Asda. We can spend anything upto £90 depending on how much baby stuff we need (2 packs of nappies on offer, a tub of milk and some emergency ready mix cartons adds £30 to the shop). I normally try to keep it around the £60 mark though. Thats mostly fresh ingredients for proper home cooked food too.

I used to work for the Reckitt Benckiser pesticide and home chemical division in Sydney. That company made the own brand products for at least two major supermarkets to exactly the same standards and active ingredient levels as their own brand, which sold for less than half price when compared to the major brand. If you think that Tesco, Asdaet al have their own chemical division to make supercheap low cost household chemicals then you would be mistaken. Own Brand FTMFW!

Yes it is a much better proposition. I find that the ASDA own brand Gold coffee granules is as good as Gold Blend. ASDA own brand baked beans are as good as Heinz and the ASDA Smart Price Ketchup is as good as Heinz as well, though the Smart Price baked beans are not quite as good.

As far as I know the only major brand who doesn't produce for others is Colgate.

I think we spend approx £60 per week on shopping - it depends whether I buy beer or the wife buys her favourite tipple. We also top up during the week with bread, milk etc. Included in that is stuff for lunch so rarely spend more than £15 a month on top of the weekly shop. I suppose if you add all the take-aways and trips to McD's it could reach £100 per week, not to mention being away from home at airshows etc - one week at Waddington can cost almost £200 on food and beer (lots of beer admittedly ) - and that's just for me...... Whenever I go to Waddington, I stay in Barracks; one of the advantages of having a Wing Commander brother Full cooked English breakfast made for me as well ..
