The starter made me laugh: lobster, fennel, fennel, fennel, gooey stuff and lobster.

Needs more vegetables... you'd be dead before you were 20 if you ate that every day.

There's no law that says fine dining has to be toxic

I'm not a big fan, but that's not what I meant. That little bit of fennel is about the only part of the meal that isn't heaped in fat and is vaguely green.

It doesn't matter because I won't be ordering it, but it's sad that the winning meal of a popular competition has to be so incredibly unhealthy and badly balanced. It's no better than spam spam spam, egg and spam. If that's what people aspire to, we're all doomed.

It's Masterchef not Weightwatchers. When I go out for a posh meal I'm not thinking about how many calories it is. For most people its a special treat not your every day diet.

Did you watch any of the show?

I have watched quite a bit, although only one or two of the recent series. There's also a Japanese version which is quite funny.

Just because it's a special treat doesn't mean it has to be so terribly unhealthy. I think I'd probably be ill before I finished that, and it would take about a month for a healthy person to fully recover their liver function and blood fats. Fat and sugar at those levels are noxious. Maybe once in a lifetime it's OK to indulge like that, but no more.

It's easy to make fat and sugar look pretty and taste good. It's a piece of cake to make a pretty cake.

I'd be far more interested if the rules dictated a healthy balance. It wouldn't be so bad if it was just the pudding, but all three courses is just too much.

I do not watch primarily because it is food porn, and I could never cook any of it. Though I do agree with you about going out, I never worry about the calories. What I get are things that I could not do at home or too complicated for me. It is a treat and so I throw caution to the wind.

To be fair, I agree with Caz - it's a one-off treat. I've been to a few Michelin-starred restaurants - typically every six to twelve months. The food is good but it's the company and the conversation that matters. I'd wager I've been to MaccyDs and its ilk more frequently than that. Having said that, I still order a side salad whenever I eat out.

Edd and I went for afternoon tea at the Charing cross hotel yesterday (got a very good deal with a couple tickets to see Spamalot).

Sandwiches were ok as white bread sandwiches are.
Pudding was creme brulee and fruit tarts, both very tasty/
The scones were warm of the oven and really light and soft with plenty of cream and jam.
Brownies and macaroons were good ( I think macaroons were Laduree)

It was all served in very pretty japanese inspired tableware.
Overall, very good :D

We had a voucher for a free bottle of wine at one of our regular pubs for my boyfriend's birthday . Went there last night and I had butterfly prawns with piri piri sauce, roast chicken with jacket potato and coleslaw. My boyfriend has same starter but with a hot chilli sauce and a huge toad in the hole with mash and vegetables. The free bottle of wine selected was the house red pinotage which was very good.

I also tried the new McDonalds smoothie. I had strawberry and banana which was very very good and cured my hangover straight away

Have you ever tried them with peanut butter and ketchup? It sounds gross but is incredible.
