I went back this morning. Different guy at the till but the trainee from Monday was still there and both were grateful that I'd returned as it would have come out of the guy's wages. Only (minor) concern I had was lack of receipt (all electronic) so no evidence to show that I'd paid the cash (apart from the video cameras).

Wouldn't even be the oil company. Most petrol stations are privately owned and get their branding from the company they sign a long term supply contact with. Eg. The same bloke owns the petrol station in my parent's village now as the day I was born. In that time the branding has switched between Esso, Fina and Total. You know when idiots email you to ask you to boycott a petrol station as a form of protest? Well it only hurts the local owner not the oil companies at all.

Technically illegal as far as I'm aware. You can't be held personally liable for a mistake, if they think they're giving stuff away then they'd have to class it as theft and involve the police.

I worked in a service station, and certainly that's how it was when I was there. I only ever had one "drive-off" and luckily the bloke realised his mistake and came back - adding about 100 miles to his journey!

You would have had to sign that in your contract, which you wouldn't sign if you read it.

Realised my post and your reply are ambiguous or unclear maybe - I meant a drive-off would be a police matter, and not come out of my pay. Not that I ever had a contract!

drive-off = police you suspected of giving away fuel for free = police anything else = no recourse

Told you. At least you get loads of Karma for that. The fact that petrol stations run on such low margins means that they take any losses from staff. It might be wrong but it is common knowledge that is what happens to petrol station staff.

It was how it worked when I worked in a petrol station as well, if the till didn't balance at the end of the shift, you were liable for the difference. Drive offs were different. And like JJW, no contracts.

In parts of America you have to pay before you fill up if you're not paying at the pump (then go back in afterwards for your change). It eliminates drive offs. But it is time consuming.

How ridiculously windy it was last night and there's not a breath of air right now. Reckon it's the calm before the storm.
