Umm, no. Just no.

I believe that planet is called London/Swindon/Bristol/Exeter/Cardiff. At least in my experience. Learn to expect it from other people and you might not need to rant so much (or move here, where everybody's crazy, but there isn't enough traffic to make it a problem).

They don't lift carpet pile. If you live in an office, with those rubbish flat hard wearing carpets, or have non-carpeted floors, knock yourself out.
If, on the other hand, you have comfortable carpet with a little depth to it, you'll want something with a beater bar to lift the pile and suck up the crap.
For a commercial setting where you go with hard wearing rather than comfortable, knock yourself out.
For at home, Dyson FTMFW.

Yeah, but next time you can ignore her and blame it on the phones! ;) :P

But I'd still get grief for that!

Agreed, but I'd go one further and say Dyson FTMFW, providing it isn't one of the upright variety. Oh they're very good, no argument here, but they breakdown. A lot!

However, the squat Dysons seem to be nigh-on indestructible. We replaced our first one in January, after fifteen years service. During the same time, my sister has had at least four of the upright models - she loves them, but they only seem to be good for three or four years.

We've had ours for ten years and it's never put a foot wrong.

I've mentioned this before. We had an upright Dyson. We bought it in the afternoon and my mother had already vacuumed the whole house the same morning with a Hoover. We vacuumed the house again and it was like we had never vacuumed the house. We had to empty the Dyson three times! It lasted a little over ten years (when my father decided it was a good idea to use it to pick up rubble from having some wiring done) and I bought my mother a replacement as a present. She went for a cylinder and it's been fine so far, except someone took the brush bar out and there's a piece missing so it doesn't work. Just ordered a replacement head.

Yeah, I prefer cylinder hoovers (noun) too.

So where does your sister get her opinion? I've never been posh enough to have carpet with a little depth to it! Every Dyson I've used has paled in comparison to a Henry (especially the ball) when it comes to suction and not spraying dust everywhere.

I have two preferences. Hard floors and back mounted vacuum cleaners.

The last home she had had mostly tiled or boarded floors. This is, I suspect, where it's come from. And I also suspect the vac was bought through the industrial supplier for the farm, and was probably a good deal cheaper...
