I'm trying to get a look at the last months internet usage and I can't figure out how to do this using the BT.com My BT online service.
I use iStat menu and use the network monitor option. Only downside is that it resets every time you turn off the machine.
Does that let you know overall usage from different machines as well as iOS devices?

Yes but a decent DIYer will probably have all the tools required, so that reason is debatable. If you need to buy the tools that also changes the economics of it. If you have the tools then your costs will be just the cost of the wood and possibly hooks or magnets depending on how you plan to hold the keys. Which for the amount of wood and hooks could be less than a pound. Strong magnets will be much more but still only a few pounds.

A shelf isn't much use without brackets. That's at least another 3 quid for concealed ones. We're almost up to a fiver! :)

Drilling the holes would probably actually be somewhat tricky. You'll have to get them sufficiently parallel so that the shelf slides onto the 'poles' without jamming. You'd probably need one of those.. oh, can't remember the name, but it's a thing which has a vice you put what you're drilling in and you put a drill in a fitting which holds it vertically, then you have a handle that moves the drill up and down so you can drill into things repeatedly in a very uniform way. Not an esoteric piece of kit at all but not one someone who generally fixes rather than makes things would have.

It's undoubtedly the case that a lot of things like this are actually more about people being 'time poor' than anything. You're paying the cost because you have other things to do than spend time drilling, sanding and varnishing bits of wood. If you want to do it yourself you can and thus spend less in cash but more in time.

I've got the 'istat' iOS app. If it's the one I think it is, you run a 'server' component on each PC and that sends data to the iOS app over wireless, so you can monitor various things on various devices, including the iOS device the app is running on. Don't think you can monitor multiple iOS devices though. You can also port forward things so you can monitor from anywhere.

I'm not sure where I'd buy a strip magnet like that. I'm also not sure I could rout a neat groove for it with the tools at hand.

However, I'm actually quite content to use a hook.

Emily has drawn in pen on my graphics tablet. Nicola emailed me at work to let me know only presumably she's not quite sure what it is....

She has drawn with pen all over the white thing on ur computer. Its like the mouse mat but u use a fake pen on it.

 *

*although it's really not funny. The tablet being drawn on I mean, not the email. That was very funny.

No it only works for one machine. You need to do do something else for every other device. It is one reason why I opted for a broadband account with Sky as it is unlimited.

See post above. The same company does another app that works across platforms. It involves installing something on every PC/Mac/Linux box you want to monitor though.

Thanks for that. I have all my devices running through the same internet so this will be very useful.

Dunno whether to laugh or cry.

Reminds of of James May's magnetic ceiling tiles.
