The comments on this Garundia article amused me: When Food Experiments Go Wrong.

Have you people never heard of a box in a box full of Styrofoam chips or bubble wrap or screwed up newspapers, just to mess with people like... well, people like you!

I have people who try to hide the contents but is it really essential. Even if we can tell that it contains some DVD's or CD's we still do not know exactly what it is. I do remember a friends wife spending thousands on her very young kids and getting very annoyed that they seemed to enjoy the boxes more than the presents. Martin Lewis did something similar with 8 year olds on TV last week. They enjoyed the wrapped boxes, as much as presents.

I think this is how it works. :?

Orange Hair is asking the question so they must want a beer or the answer would have to be no.
Yellow Hair says they don’t know therefore they must want a beer or the answer would be no.
Black Hair says they don’t know therefore they must want a beer or the answer would be no.
Brown Hair says yes on the basis that they want a beer and because of the answers above the others must also want a beer.

Often when asked that question, people would incorrectly shout out "yes" without knowing the other people's preference. "everyone wants beer" is false if one or more people do not want beer.

No individual can know if everyone wants beer until the others have confirmed in some way. If one individual does not want beer then they know the answer is no, and no further answers would be required.

Another more "normal" response would be "I know I do". The person asking the question can then deduce the answer to their question without it specifically being answered.

While the "I know I do" response is not incorrect, it's not an actual answer to the question. It's proffering further information which may be required in order to deduce the answer. The logicians don't offer additional information directly, since for them a question requires a "yes", "no" or "pass" answer.

It is funny on the first level because the logicians fail to offer additional helpful information like a "normal" person, but instead give a strict logical answer. It's especially funny because it achieves the same result in this instance, but in some circumstances would not. Additionally, the question of itself is not necessarily useful. If the first or second answer was "No", then she would not know how many beers to buy. This makes it ironic.

The first person is wanting a drink so asks if anyone else wants a drink.
Second person also wants a drink but does not know if the person whose round it is has the funds to pay, so says don't know rather than a definitive no.
Same for the third person.
It is the last person's round so he knows that he has enough to pay for the round so since the others had not said no, he knows it would be four drinks, so he says yes. ;)

Whenever I hear the name Jeremy Hunt I automatically change the first letter of his surname in my mind. Why's that then I wonder? lol

I not surprised. I reckon a lot of people think the same thing. It's such an annoying name. Whenever I hear it my mind just glazes over and I don't pay any attention to what they're saying.
