Generally I'm not a Tim Burton fan. From the trailer I was expecting it to be more of a spoof comedy than it was, but it was actually a normal film. I'd give it 3 out of 5 stars. Well worth watching once, but I doubt I'll buy it on DVD.

I just watched Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
I've never fully watched the original films - I've seen bits'n'bobs and together with the Simpsons episode, have an idea of what happens.
The film starts off fairly slow-paced but slowly builds up. I was rooting for the apes the whole time. I really enjoyed it and at no point was it as predictable as I'd thought. Give it 5/5.

Saw 'Avengers Assembled' in the week. Better than I thought it would be. The Whedon groupies have been vastly exaggerating how complex and interesting the characterisation is (seriously, they're just full colour cardboard cutouts instead of being black & white) but the script doesn't take itself too seriously and all the major players put in reasonable performances, nobody is phoning it in. The SFX are first class and there are a couple of genuinely funny lines.
It's still as dumb as a brick but it's endearingly so, like a dog chasing it's own tail.
If you're looking for 'popcorn blockbuster' to watch on an evening on the sofa, you could do much, much worse. One thing though - in the cinema I went to see it at, it seemed incredibly loud. Might not want to crank up the home cinema too much unless you live in a detached house.

Hmm, maybe it wasn't just our crappy cinema then! It was properly loud and the sound mix definitely didn't favour the dialogue in certain parts.

That's because cinemas have massive subwoofers cranked up to 'thunderous' because they have to offer something more than the "at home experience".

I've rated 691 films out of 10 on IMDB - annoyingly you can't rank them in order of my score when you're not me, however, should you be interested to see what sort of films I like, here's my ratings: http://www.imdb.com/user/ur7693773/ratings(my rating should be at the bottom of each title) PS I've no idea why Titanic, Leon and Great Escape are my latest reviewed, i think IMDb went tits up a few days ago and lost all my scores, but they're back now)

i.e. Irritating people, phones ringing, rustling papers, small screens, talking through the film. I prefer the cinema.

which cinema did you see it in? I saw it at Dublin Road Moviehouse. The sound was just fine in that screening. Mark

Odyssey, never again if I can help it... Wanna try that one at Dundonald at some point, maybe for Prometheus.

I've seen previews. It is highly awesome. Timur Bekmambetov knows how to make vampire movies. You know, ones that don't involve 'sparkling' and aren't basically the badly-expressed post-pubescent fantasy of a 14 year old girl.

Quite. I saw Avengers in the largest cinema in Scandinavia. It was amazing. Looked a bit like the main screen at the Empire Leicester Square, but bigger and filled with cute girls Fantastic Danish crowd who applauded at the end of the film - just like Americans. They seem to have a real reverence for the cinematic experience. I love home cinema, but how many people live in a detached house these days? I barely live in my teenage bedroom surrounded by my parents and my 16yr old sister!
