Bummer. Good luck. I was working for a small firm which went under, and we didn't get any pay for the last couple of weeks. There just wasn't any money to pay us, which is why they went bust.

Sorry to hear about your woes.
On the CS side of things, you can get a 30 day trial of most CS products, so that would help.
The other thing you could do, is look at the Cloud model and rent the software when you need it, after the 30 days. Still not cheap, but 50 quid a month is cheaper than forking out a couple of grand up front. You could, for example, rent it whilst preparing a new portfolio and then let it lapse, until you have a new project or you get a new job and need to work with the tools regularly.
I'll keep my fingers crossed, that you find something new quickly.

^This. What can I say? Good luck with seeking a new job. Having been in similar situations in the past, I know how tough it is to start over again. Don't forget to consider, should you be unable to find a new job in the design world, looking at other jobs that will at least pay the bills. It'll be toughest when, no matter how many applications you send out, you never hear a peep from the potential employers.

Sorry to hear about the news. Legitimate software can be immensely costly, sometimes unfairly so. Not that I'm condoning piracy or anything

At least Big D suggested what could be a very viable option to help him get started legally. We all wish him the best luck.

How all the best films, the classics, have familiar, instantly recognisable music.

I wonder which way around it is, the music is popular because of the film/cartoon or vice versa!

I suspect it's the film's popularity that makes the tune. Not to say that the tune doesn't feed into that popularity.

Someone really needs to explain the Blue energy advert for me. It looks like a turd riding on a dog, bopping to some music.

Classic FM was getting itself into a lather the other week about how computer games music was higher up it's top 300 chart than Mozart was. Note to self: take a DAB radio next time.

Like dance music or actual music used in a game?
