The Chems were used in the opening ceremony. There was more chance of Freddie Mercury turning up in person than the KLF being involved.

Which is a shame.
Would've been better than George singing his new single. I thought he was going to sign off with 'Buy it on iTunes!'

True but in the KLF's case they made the decision to kill it and, to their credit, it's a decision they've stuck to. Even so, the viking longboat with Annie Lennox on board did oddly remind me of the video for 'America What Time Is Love'.

Agreed. A rather off kilter moment in a games which, IMO, managed to just about rise above the general commercial cynicism surrounding it.

I thought that was a bit of a turning point for the closing ceremony tbh. Up to that point it felt rather bland, almost what you'd expect an Olympic ceremony to be like - a ceremony designed by a committee. After Idle's appearance it rather kicked up a gear. It still didn't match the opening ceremony but then it would have been a miracle if it had. Taken in isolation it was a better than average example of an Olympic 'bash', just it was rather unlucky to be being compared to the best opening ceremony ever....

I think it was one of the laziest ceremonies we've seen - a ceremony-by-numbers. And most of the world are presumably thinking most of our musical output is made by a collection of OAP, on a perpetual SAGA break who drop back in to Blighty to knock out a tune occasionally whenever the nation needs it.

Maybe but you needed bands the a large percentage of the world had heard of

Who would you have had then -

I'm loving Channel 4's promotion of the Paralympics.

I thought the advert for British Fashion was a bit off kilter too.

Also - how many countries have their military perform at the ceremonies? That felt a little out of sorts with the spirit of the thing too.

Stone Roses.
Happy Mondays.
Carter.
Radiohead.
Pink Floyd.
Coldplay.
Plan B.
Kasabian.
The Beta Band.
Pop Will Eat Itself.

And no, I wouldn't have had the Spice Girls yelling at the crowd from a taxi for 5 minutes.
And yes, I would love to have got Vic & Bob to put the closing ceremony together.

I don't think it's unprecedented, although I don't claim to have an encyclopaedic knowledge of IoC ceremonies. it's not as if they were waving guns around. Frankly, on the list of 'things people might take offense to' at the Olympics, a few people in uniform carrying a flag is some way from the top.

The G4S failings have meant a military presence throughout the games.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Well the 1st lot are about as old as the ones that played

And (I am not a big music person) but I have not heard of the last 4 so if they had played I would have been - Who the 'ell are they?

I see that G4S have paid the army £2.5 million (out of their £248 million contract!)
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-19240654

Am I alone in thinking that's a bit on the low side?

They should have billed them that much per day, at least.

It'll be interesting to see how many more government contracts they win though.

The first lot are about 20 years younger - more in fact, looking at Ray Davies.
The last lot are widely recognised as some of the best British acts, who deserve to be shown off.

Hang on.The army get paid anyway, and this is an extra donation. Whatever (if anything) the govenrment do re: payments/fines is another thing.

Pay or donation both involve money but are two entirely different terms.
