From interesting to intriguing. It's been quite a while since I was intrigued. Hmmm ;) :P

So are you lurking and modding Heather?

I lurk. Happily, there's not a lot of modding to do, and when I fail to catch something the other mods do.

I just don't get the time to sit at the pooter these days. This is a Good Thing.

Bratty that's actually quite funny. Well done on a 'normal' post!

So it seems (as of a meeting about 3PM today), I have a 1 in 4 chance of being made redundant quite soon. Or I can skip the 'draw the shortest straw' malarkey and apply for a voluntary redundancy package they'll be running for a month or two before the compulsory redundancies get announced.

hmm.

Having been through that a few times, you have my sympathy. Voluntary once, compulsory once and dodged the bullet three times. The worst of it is when you get some no mark wet behind the ears HR numpty scoring your worth to the company - f***ing insulting.

Thanks. Yes, there's been a bit of that. There's also a part which can be summarised as

"We're moving the service you run to the cloud so we won't need you any more and you're going to be made redundant. But before you leave, can you move the service you run to the cloud for us? Cheers."

Take redundancy, don't migrate app on time. Leave on Friday, come back on Monday as a contractor for £300 per day. Finish the job ;)

Hah! The thought had occurred. However I suspect 'finish the job to an agreed standard by date agreed' may be a term of the voluntary severance package.

Given the people they are planning to get rid of, I think there's a very high chance that a few months to a year after the dust settles things may have gone so utterly titsup that they do need to get people in to sort the whole mess out. However it's also the case that legally you're not allowed to employ someone you made redundant within a certain number of years. So I suspect it may be more 'sitting in the pub commiserating with the poor bastards left behind in the raging chaos'.

They can employ you as a contractor with a slightly different role name (as it's the position that's made redundant) and it's fine.
You just have to watch out for IR35 on it (so you'll need another client or two as well)

It's not years , it's months IIRC (between 3 and 6 I think). If they realise they've made a catastrophic mistake there are ways to get around that anyway - change the job description a bit and use a different job title usually works, especially since our beloved government made it very difficult (by which I mean too expensive for most people, especially if they just lost their job) to go to an employment tribunal.
