Not much details in the ticker but they do say it will be screening all the qualifying & races live in HD. God knows what they're going to fill the rest of the time with mind. Other motorsports possibly? Also no info as to whether it'll be thrown in with a Sky Sports sub, or whether you'll have to pay more for it... Update : More info via the Guardian Looks like it will be thrown in either with a Sky Sports or a HD sub, with a SD version for people who have Sky Sports but not HD. And no other racing, it's a pure F1 channel. That's going to see a lot of dead air, I reckon. Jon | | | | |
Is there any news whether this will be on Freeview? Even if it was on TopUP TV I would be tempted if the price was right.

If not, I imagine the internet is going to take a right hammering as everyone gets the live stream from various places Seriously - very few people would install Sky just for one event, especially if they're renting.

I'm sure there is something in the Concorde Agreement about F1 being free to air. Unless the BBC having 10 races covers that.

IIRC 'F1' isn't one of the protected events, although the British GP specifically may be. Hmm.. maybe not. Wikipedia says According to the OFCOM web site, The following are Category A FIFA World Cup finals (all matches) UEFA European Football Championship finals (all matches) FA Cup final Scottish Cup final (applies to Scotland only) Grand National Epsom Derby RL Challenge Cup final RU World Cup final Wimbledon Championships men's and women's finals Olympic Games (it is not stated explicitly whether this refers to the Winter or Summer Games, or both) The following are Category B IAAF World Championships Cricket Test matches played in England Cricket World Cup (the final, semi-finals, and any matches involving the Home Nations) The Open (golf) The Ryder Cup Formula 1 motor racingRU World Cup (excluding the final) RU Six Nations Championship matches involving the Home Nations Wimbledon Championships (excluding the finals) Commonwealth Games According to that, there's no legal requirement in the UK for all races to be shown live, anywhere. IIRC it was the Concorde Agreement between the FIA and the F1 teams that stated that every race had to be free to watch (or something).

It's all just speculation though, isn't it? The details of the Concorde Agreement have not been, nor are they likely to be, disclosed to the public.

Think it's sad that Brundle's now getting some stick on twitter, I can't blame the guy for wanting the best opportunity for the race commentary. The BBC have pretty much shafted the F1 Team, along with the fans. And I thought Jake Humphrey's little dig in response to Martin's first announcement was pretty childish... ...thought it was a bit frosty between those two on the F1 Forum on Sunday! Good on Brundle for not rising to that snide comment!

The current agreement (2009) is public. However, it is currently being changed now that Sky has come on board.

If I was in the same position as Brundle I think I'd have done the same thing. He's probably getting quite a bit more in his wallet for the move also.

Pathetic really - I really enjoy Brundle's commentary, along with DC, and I am gutted that he won't be commenting on the BBC next year. You can hardly blame the guy for wanting to protect his career though. The beeb are squeezing the purse ever more tightly, and I bet SKY were willing to throw money at him.
I'll see how it goes, with limited live coverage, a weakened commentary team, and extended highlights. I certainly will NOT be forking out extra money to watch it on SKY.
My fear is that this is but the first step along the path to exclusive TV rights for SKY, at which point I shall stop watching the races live.

Personally I can’t wait for the F1 Sky channel in true HD and now Martin is joining the team its excellent news imo. Don’t get me wrong the last three years have been excellent coverage on the BBC but like all good things it’s come to an end. DC looks like his hanging on in there with the Beeb though. Edit - good result on the Guru for me! Edd you nearly had me in the closing stages but I managed to pullout a lead again a couple of races ago and Spreadie got a head of steam up in the lat quarter. Double Edit – Raikkonen returns to F1 with two-year Lotus Renault deal

im happy that the sky team are allowing it for people in HD without a sport sub, and its going to be on sky go. so I can watch the races at uni while my parents still have a sky sub also, I did not see kimi joining lotus, does this mean petrov is gone?

It'll never be on freeview. It might be on BT Vision, which uses the freeview platform to deliver pay services. Is TopUpTV still going? Blimey. Jon
