Just picked up mine from an O2 shop. Big sign on the door saying 'iPhone 4 sold out'. Girl I was dealing with said they had a massive queue and the first person had been there since 1AM that morning . They didn't have anywhere near enough phones, unsurprisingly. Mine's now syncing but I won't be able to make calls until the number is swapped over. Will try wifi once it's finished syncing. MicroSIM was an absolute swine to get out of the 'normal' SIM.

The dude in the Apple Store did all my microSIM setting up. It was a painless process. Mark

It's easy. Push microsim bit. Microsim falls out.

Mine's up now too. Can't obviously cause the signal loss thing people are talking about but the signal level does seem a bit.. hyperactive. Hasn't ever caused me any problems but it is a little disconcerting.

I was thinking that there must be at least 500 people in that queue. Which means that a UK provincial city can muster more support for the iPhone that the Microsoft Kin can do nationally.

I did a rough calculation on the walking speed and time - I think it was something like 100 yards long. If you assume a person takes up roughly a foot cube of space in a queue, that makes for a back of a beer mat number of roughly 300 people. I bet they didn't have anywhere near 300 phones to sell. Oi, not so much of the 'provincial' Yes but the Kin is a truly, truly [LIFTED] phone. Jon

I think that the queue was longer. The film ran for 48 seconds and to only walk 100 yards in 48 seconds is very slow. Even taking your figure of 300 in the queue it is still more than half of the entire US population could muster up for the kin. Maybe the Microsoft staff knew it was bad so were busy when it came to buying one.
I would regard all cities outside London as provincial plus Manchester is a long way from London. I was not so trying to insult Manchester.

Despite the devices being aimed at COMPLETELY different markets, the 'article' was a rumour at best. maybe 300 is the collective of devices Apple could produce for launch day on time without a manufacturing 'defect' such as yellow screen or signal dropping when you do the most outrageous of things..... holding it while making a call And it looks like the screen is pretty flaky too, number of reports of the plastic shattering already too

Yes different markets is a definite reason not to get too upset but I think that even Blackberry do better than that. It depends on how much marketing that was involved. Okay the iPhone had huge marketing wether intentional or not.

Blackberry are for a different market too. The kin is targeted at the same/very similar market the NGage was targeted at, and that was a pretty epic fail too in the UK

Standard walking pace is roughly 3MPH. In 48 seconds at normal walking pace you'd therefore go (3*1760*48)/(60*60) or a smidgeon over 70 yards. 100 yards seemed a good rough estimate, although it may actually be shorter as you probably walk more slowly when recording something. As I said, the kin is an awful device. There's only so much that's bad you can convince people to buy with their own money, even if you're the one that's paying them. I doubt the MS employees who bought plays for sure devices or the Zune would be willing to shell out more of their hard earned on the kin. Fair enough.

Very true. I don't really think the Kin was ever intended to be a competitor for the iPhone/Blackberry/Android. The problem is that those devices are now 'leaking out' of what you'd expect their market to be. A lot of people who really don't need a 'smartphone' are buying iPhones, HTC phones and Blackberrys because they look at them and look at standard 'consumer' phones and pick the one with more features - even though they are features they won't use. I have no idea what your average teenager does with a Blackberry they couldn't do with a bog-standard Nokia, but I'm seeing an awful lot of teenagers with Blackberrys and iPhones.

Is it true that you can cause signal loss on the phone and Apple are telling customers they are holding the phone wrong or advising they buy a case?
