When a friend of mine had a similar situation he was able to transfer the mortgage from one party to the other and go bust but still live there. There might be a legal way to clear the negative equity and still live there. It is worth looking at.

Actually, I know someone did something similar. They were also getting divorced. I don't know the details though.

Sorry to hear that Mark. I hope it doesn't come to worst-case.

You're not the only person to suggest this and I think it's what I'm going to do. I'm likely to get the redundancy cheque this afternoon. Mark

I was thinking, in such circumstances, I'd "gift" the money to a third party for safe keeping. That way, what you ain't got others can't get.

Sorry to hear the news fella, it sounds devastating and I wouldn't blame you for venting (although I refuse to put up with any Mac/Nikon fanboy crap ) I sincerely hope the new year starts better for you but I'm guessing all this is going to take a while to sort out. Fingers crossed the finances can be worked out too. I'm sure it's enough dealing with wife/job loss without being stung for the house. I would agree with what a lot of others are saying on here tbh with regards to 'hiding' your redundancy - I'm sure you could always pay someone back that loan you had of them a while back :nudgex2 winkx2: All the best m8

+1 especially if you have to use the bankruptcy route to keep the house.

A mate of mine got his company to hold back his bonuses whilst he was going through divorce so his wife couldn't claim any of it. He also started paying back "all that money he'd borrowed from mates" so his account was empty. Check with your local CAB as there may be ways around things if you haven't really been living at home but have been paying the mortgage.

I've just realised that you need utility bills to open a new bank account. *sigh* I'm stuffed. (8+(

Could you obtain a copy of a recent mortgage statement? I assume that you haven't had any bills in your name wherever you have been living recently.

This is correct. I may have a recent bank statement or a Sky TV subscription bill - anyone know would either of those be sufficient? Mark

Open a new current account at a bank you already have an account with. They shouldn't need any proof of address.

My mortgage is with a company that's owned by Santander. My bank is owned by Santander. I'd really like to put my redundancy somewhere that isn't owned by the same parent company. Mark
