This thread reminds me, Star Trek, what a great film. Green woman though, would you?

I'm sure the hulk would be right in there. Myself, I think I'll pass! Prof, she's all yours by the looks of it! On the other hand,

Spot on. I sometimes wonder, ten minutes into a conversation how we got around to discussing garden gnomes or some other weird sh*t and it all started with a chat about "Live at the Apollo" or something equally far removed from the other subject. On the subject of MJ. I think that the point is simply that the thread was intended as a place to mourn his passing, not slag him off, but he was such a bizzare character that it is hardly surprising that the thread took the turn that it did.

There might be another solution here. If the OP were to state any off-topic direction that could be reasonably considered off-limits, might that help people know where the line is? I know, for instance, that I am guilty of thread-diversion myself; I never try to go off-topic - I just kind of do it accidentally. If the OP were to give me a guideline, I'd be much less likely to do it.
E.g. MJ Thread
"... Please don't turn this into a slagging-off or a MJ joke thread."
And, if I do step over the line, PM me and I'll remove the offending comment.
P.S. (Definitely purple)

Perhaps that's it... As I said, I see the forums as a more formal medium than chatting in the pub or wherever...If we were going to meander, why have topics at all? Why not one big thread that everyone just chats in...

I think it's good to go off-topic briefly for one or two posts in a way that follows the natural flow of the thread, perhaps with the occational </off topic> remark to push it back.
I think it's bad to get personal, and in fact I seem to remember it's already against the rules.
Not that rules are likely to stop me if someone gets my goat pregnant...
If an off-topic post is interesting enough to warrant a seperate thread, that's great. Mostly, they're just brief interludes without enough substance to substantiate a meaningful thread of their own. Like Megan Fox.
