I agree. Mallrats is underrated IMO.
The problem I have with Kubrick is that while is movies are technically very accomplished, I can't get involved in the story he's telling. It's difficult to explain but the way he deals with actors means I just don't care what happens to their characters. I've seen The Shining, 2001, Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket, some of Eyes Wide Shut and found them to be quite boring. Ridley Scott sometimes comes across the same way, being so concerned with the
look of a shot that the story takes second place.
It would be good to add John McTiernan to the list of great directors but following up Die Hard and Predator (two of my favourite movies) has proven to be something he hasn't been able to manage yet. I guess he's got too many problems in his personal life!
